Directly before the Oscar’s, Celebrity Stylist and Chris McMillan veteran, Jason “The Men’s Groomer” Schneidman shared rockin’ grooming tips with our male readers. With an impressive portfolio of celeb clients that include Bruno Mars, Hugh Jackman, Liam Neeson and Robert Pattinson -- just to name a few -- Jason understands men’s style and has again bestowed his expert advice on men’s styles for the upcoming season. From what’s on-trend to achieving the best look for you, Jason shares all.
TME: Growing up with four brothers I know firsthand that guys want to stay on-trend, yet are often lost when it comes to men’s hairstyles. What are you seeing as on-trend for Fall/Winter?
Jason Schneiman: There are two styles that I think will be around for a while. Both are very wearable. The first -- clean-cut and traditional with a defined part -- is one of my favorites. It is classic, sophisticated and effortlessly cool and ongoing shows like Mad Men, Suits and even True Bloodhelp keep it on our cultural radar. I also think men will continue to grow out their hair, as made popular by Jared Leto.
Who’s wearing these looks right now?
Jason: Jon Hamm is rocking the traditional look that guys are loving, as are Justin Timberlake and Ryan Gosling. It is a professional and polished look that is easy to style.
Stars like Jared Leto and Russell Brand let their hair down and keep it natural, and it’s only going to pick up. It’s no-fuss, simple to maintain, and I think we’re going to see more stars growing out their locks, and even experimenting with the “man bun,” which is starting to pick up steam.
When changing to an on-trend style, what’s the best way to communicate with the barber or stylist?
Jason: My best advice is to consult with a professional before you make any drastic hairstyle changes. They’ll be able to give you an unbiased opinion and see if a style will work with your hair texture and face shape. It’s also best to bring in pictures of the style you have in mind, worn on someone with a similar face shape.
How can the guys maintain their new look at home? What are the best products for different hair textures and easy style maintenance?
Jason: What I try to underscore with all my clients is the importance of the wash: it really sets the stage for styling, provides a good base, and gives you just enough build-up and volume to start your styling process. I like the new Dove Men+Care Aqua Impact Shampoo, which makes hair 3X stronger. It’s infused with Bali sea salt and has this kick of freshness that reminds me of the beach.
To move to styling, start by warming up the product in your hand—and, then distribute evenly throughout your hair. If you have thick hair, I recommend using a dime size mixture of both a paste and a lotion-based product. This combination will help control volume and shrink the texture of your hair. On the other hand, if you have thin hair, it is best to use very, very little product. I suggest using a pea size amount of paste, followed by dry shampoo. Be careful not to use too much product as it can make your hair look oily. Finally, if you have curly/wavy hair, use a curl cream. This lotion-based product will help control the volume.
We keep seeing mega-stars like Jared Leto quite literally rockin’ the ombre look. Does hair color factor into staying on-trend? If so, what’s hot for Fall/Winter?
Jason: If you’re going to add color, just make sure it’s natural! Always go for guylights - it has to look really, really, natural.
