Everyone walking the Red Carpet at Sunday’s Grammy Awards definitely made a statement. But among the masses, Katy Perry really stood out and had the most transformative look that began with whimsical on the Red Carpet and morphed into sultry for the performance of her hit “Dark Horse”.

Katy, as always, was stunning and luckily The Makeup Examiner has Katy’s full beauty breakdown … straight from her expert beauty team! Peruse through the slideshow for your favorite look and the complete how-to!

Celebrity Stylist Renato Campora shares, “Katy wanted to wear her hair up and I was inspired by the soft, romantic look of her dress”. First I sprayed her hair with the Herbal Essences Naked Sheer Shine Mist and then blew it out to a sleek, polished finish. Once her hair was dry, I pulled it into a tight, high ponytail. To add more volume and texture to the ponytail, I sprayed the Herbal Essences Naked Dry Shampoo throughout the length of her hair. Then I twisted the ponytail and wrapped it around the base of her hair to create the crown. I secured the crown with bobby pins and misted the hair with the Herbal Essences Naked Flexible Hold Spritzer to polish her look and set her style in place.

Katy Perry 2014 Grammy’s Red Carpet Beauty by Jake Bailey - “Katy had a very clear idea of what she wanted for the Grammy’s this year. She wanted sexy eyes; elegant lashes and she wanted to GLOW! I was quick to agree as I had seen the ethereal gown she was going to wear – stunning!,” shared Jake.

I started by prepping her skin with Olay’s new Regenerist Luminous Tone Perfecting Cream. This is perfect to use under makeup as it delivers lots of moisture but still feels lightweight and foundation glides smoothly over it. Once the moisturizer had absorbed, I got to work on the skin. Since we were going for maximum "glow" I mixed equal parts CoverGirl BB cream and CoverGirl TruBLEND Liquid Foundation on the back of my palm before buffing it all over her face and neck with a soft brush for sheer coverage and a polished glow.

I started the eye look by painting a delicate line onto her lashline and a subtle “cat eye” wing in the outer corners of her eyes using CoverGirl Bombshell Liquid Liner. I then coated her lashes with Bombshell Volume Mascara, top and bottom. I used the first coat to get that volumized look and then applied the second coat for the intense jet-black wet lash look. I then applied Bombshell Shine Shadow in Gold Goddess into the crease of her eyelid and highlighted her lids and brow bones with Flamed Out Shadow in Blazing White. I finished the eye look with a strong brow and a coat of clear mascara to hold them in place.

Once I finished with the eyes, I warmed and highlighted her complexion using CoverGirl TruMAGIC Sunkisser and Luminizer. I blended the Sunkisser along the hairline and into the hollows of the cheeks to add warmth and dimension. I then took the Luminizer and used it to add a golden glow to her cheekbones, tip of her nose and just above the cupid’s bow of her lips. Once I set the makeup with CoverGirl + Olay Pressed Powder, I dusted a little bit of shimmery coral blush on the apples of her cheeks.

I finished the look with a fresh coral/pink shade called "Heavenly" from the CoverGirl LipPerfection collection and tipped it with a touch of balm for extra shine.

Katy Perry 2014 Grammy Performance Look by Jake Bailey - “Once Katy walked the red carpet it was time to take her into the performance look. The performance was going to be dark and dramatic so we needed to make a change but had very little time. I made a quick change by adding a strip of spidery false lashes and adding another coat of Bombshell Mascara for extra intensity. I took my CoverGirl Bombshell Liquid Liner and extended her eyeliner outward to look a little more ‘wicked’,” shared Jake.

The fastest way to dramatically change your look is always the lips. We went from a fresh coral pink to a deep cranberry and she was instantly transformed from ethereal red carpet bombshell into a sultry witch. The shade we chose was “Euphoria” also from CoverGirl LipPerfection. She liked the color so much that she kept it on for the rest of the show as it went perfectly with her post performance outfit.

We chose a light pink shade called “Everbloom” from the CoverGirl Outlast Nail Gloss collection. It offered just a subtle hint of color to keep the focus on her gown and flawless face,” shares Celebrity Manicurist Kimmie Kyees.

Jake Bailey Reveals Secrets To Katy Perry’s AMA Look Exclusive!

Katy Perry and Jake Bailey - Courtesy of Jake Bailey
Katy Perry kicked off the American Music Awards (AMAs) Sunday, Nov. 24 with some serious Perry power. Taking to the Nokia Theatre stage in Los Angeles to perform her latest single, “Unconditionally,” Perry donned traditional Japanese dress and was joined by dancers, also donning traditional costume, for the live performance of the latest single off her album, “Prism”. But prior to taking to the stage, Katy rocked the Red Carpet in a stunning black strapless Oscar de la Renta gown, reminiscent of old Hollywood chic.

The Makeup Examiner caught up with Celebrity Makeup Artist Jake Bailey, who created Katy’s look for both the Red Carpet and her 2013 AMA performance and in an exclusive, Jake shares how he created Katy’s classic Red Carpet and whimsical performance looks.
Kay Perry’s Red Carpet Look: “The moment I saw Katy's beautiful Oscar de la Renta gown I knew we would do a red lip. Pairing it with black liner and lots of lashes we created a look that is ‘classic Katy,’” said Jake.

  • I started with a sheer application of CoverGirl Outlast Stay Fabulous 3-in-1 Foundation in Buff Beige #825. This foundation is perfect for the red carpet because it provides full coverage, but can be blended sheerly for light yet durable coverage. It lasts forever and the SPF 20 is great for a daytime red carpet event because [celebrities] have to stand in the sun for so long!
  • For the eyes I started by creating a classic Hollywood eye line using CoverGirl Liquiline Blast Eyeliner in Black Fire #410. I love this pencil because you can create the look of a liquid liner but it's much easier to apply. I accentuated the crease of her lid using Flamed Out Shadow Pot in Melted Caramel #330 and finished with the NEW Bombshell Volume Mascara in Very Black #800 – it creates extreme volume!
  • I then set the foundation with a light dusting of CoverGirl + Olay Pressed Powder in Light #330 and warmed the apples of her cheeks with Clean Glow Blush in Roses #100
  • I finished the look with a classic bold red lip, using CoverGirl LipPerfection in Hot #305 with matching liner. I used the liner to perfect her lip shape before applying color

Katy Perry’s Performance Look: “For Katy's performance we created a look inspired by her recent trip to Japan. This was a dramatic look and we only had a short amount of time to make the change so I had to work fast,” said Jake.

  • I started by dusting her all over with a theatrical powder from Ben Nye called “Super White” to pale out her complexion as quickly as possible. On her lips I refreshed her CoverGirl LipPerfection in Hot #305 and used the liner to make her lips more bow shaped.
  • I applied CoverGirl Checkers Blush in Classic Pink #110 all over the sides of her face concentrating the most pigment on her temples. I finished her look with triangular lashes I created by cutting into a particularly large false lash with small cuticle scissors to create the angular shape. This created her dramatic stage look!
And there you have it Katycats!

Katy Perry ‘Unconditionally’ Get The Look Exclusive from Jake Bailey

Courtesy of CoverGirl
Katy Perry released the official video for her power ballad, “Unconditionally,” on Nov. 20 and the fresh-faced CoverGirl looks the essence of romance. In a TME exclusive, Celebrity Makeup Artist Jake Bailey shares the step-by-step for Katy’s timeless look.

The creative direction to create the look was a collaborative effort, proving that the 29-year-old pop diva is very much in control of all aspects of her career, which is one of the reasons that Perry was tapped to represent CoverGirl.

“For this video, Katy and I wanted to create something romantic yet dramatic to reflect the style and lighting of the video. For this set up I chose to go with alabaster skin, ethereal pink cheeks and a deep matte lip for dramatic impact. I kept the eyes simple with a coat of black mascara and a light dusting of warm taupe eyeshadow,” shares Jake.

Face:
I first prepped her skin with Olay Fresh Effects “Long Live Moisture” Satin Finish Moisturizer. Since this was a matte look the satin finish was ideal under foundation to keep it looking fresh and matte minimizing the need for powder reapplications throughout the shoot.

I perfected her skin and lightened it a shade using CoverGirl Outlast Stay Fabulous 3-In-1 foundation in Classic Ivory. This foundation has great coverage, so I only had to use a small amount and spread it thinly all over her face and neck using a small flat tipped kabuki style foundation brush. The "outlast" aspect is ideal for long shoot days as it really does stay put requiring minimal touch ups.

Before applying blush I finished the foundation with a light dusting of CoverGirl + Olay Pressed Powder in Fair. It’s important to powder before applying blush so that the blush will blend easily and evenly. I then swirled CoverGirl Cheekers Blush in Classic Pink all over her outer cheeks and temples.

Eyes:
For her simple eye, I first blended a sheer amount of CoverGirl Flamed Out Shadow Pot in Melted Caramel across her lids and into the crease. I finished the eyes with a coat of CoverGirl’s brand new Bombshell Volume by Lash Blast mascara in Very Black to her top and bottom lashes. When you have big expressive eyes like Katy, sometimes all you need is a coat of super-dark mascara to make them pop.

Lips:
I finished the look with a deep cranberry lip. I mixed equal parts CoverGirl LipPerfection in Euphoria and Tempt to create the perfect shade. I then blotted her lips with a powdered tissue to set and mattify the lip.

And there you have readers, the step-by-step of Katy Perry's "Unconditionally" look. Now … go check out the video!
