Fragrance Of The Month October 2014

Hello again Beautynistas and Suavies! We hope that you enjoyed last month’s launch of The Makeup Examiner’s Fragrance Of The Monthfeature, as well as our choices. Embarking upon a new season seems to bring with it a beg for change. That, of course, is not to say that Summer 2014 wasn’t amazing -- it was indeed -- but now it’s time to embrace the cooler weather and all the brand new offerings from beauty houses around the globe!

For Fragrance Of The Month October 2014, we present two gorgeous fragrances from a perfumery we’ve previously reviewed … Bond No. 9! For the ladies we present the newly launched Queens and for the gents, it’s The Scent of Peace for Him. So, without further ado let’s get the scents.

Launched on September 18, Queens by Bond No. 9 (100 ml - $270) is inspired by the borough’s complete diversity. The borough of Queens takes the crown as the world’s most ethnically diverse urban area … and that is most definitely reflected in the scent’s exquisitely blended notes. Bond No. 9 creative director, Laurice Rahmé stated, “It’s a message for peace” that is further presented by the iconic 1964 World’s Fair Unisphere, which is rendered in gold on the front fragrance’s royal purple flacon. The back of the Queens flacon is a simple long-tailed “Q,” placing the bottling at a 5.

Queens by Bond No. 9 Notes~

Top Notes: Bergamot, Cardamom, Blackberries
Mid Notes: Tuberose, Champaca Flower, Osmanthus
Base Notes: Sandalwood, Benzoin, Musk, Amber

Queens by Bond No. 9 opens with a sweet, spicy aroma that gives way to the dominant and exotic tuberose, which seems to remain at drydown. The scent classification is Oriental Floral and although Queens is gendered unisex, it is our opinion that this fragrance is a classic for women. For our gentlemen, we present The Scent of Peace for Him (100ml - $250). Launched in October 2013, The Scent of Peace for Him was inspired by Rahmé’s passion to further a message of tolerance, comfort and, of course, peace. The flacon is classic Bond No. 9 style accented by a black bow tie around the neck and is completely reflective of the scent, which is reminiscent of the quintessential gentleman.

Top Notes: Bergamot, Pineapple, Juniper berry
Middle Notes: Blackcurrant, Cedarwood, Vetiver
Base Notes: Patchouli, Amber, Musk, Moss

The Scent of Peace for Him scent classification is Woody and opens with delicious juicy top notes of pineapple, juniper berry and bergamot. It’s fresh and evokes feelings of ease and relaxation. This fragrance moves gently into its mid-notes black current, vetiver and cedarwood with drydown leaving a lasting scent of a masterfully blended fragrance. Tru Blooms Fountain of Roses Perfume Review

Tru Blooms Fountain of Roses, launched in September 2013, is the second offering of the Tru Blooms collection from Tru Fragrance and is a rather interesting concept in scent. This unique perfume is the first of its kind to be created from flowers that were planted, grown and harvested in the urban gardens of Chicago. So right from the start, Tru Blooms Fountain of Roses piqued The Makeup Examiner’s interest.

Aesthetically pleasing packaging includes a lovely water colored printed carton with the Tru Blooms Fountain of Roses Eau de Parfum encased in a light pink rose print bottle with a wooden topper wrapped in light pink rose water color paper. Of note, is the inspiration which is derived from the pink hues found in the Chicago rose gardens. Although the inspiration is a node to the Chi-Town citizens, who took this fragrance from seed to scent, the perfume evokes thoughts of walking through any magical rose garden … wherever you may hail from.

Notes ~

Top Notes: Sparkling Citrus
Mid Notes: Rose Geranium, Lily of the Valley, Pink Rose Petals
Base Notes: Blond Woods, Patchouli, Warm Musk

Upon application, immediately evident is sparkling citrus, which quickly gives way to rose geranium, lily of the valley and pink rose petals. At this stage, Tru Blooms Fountain of Roses is a relaxing blend of summery olfaction pleasures. The scent moves into a release of curious blond woods, patchouli and warm musk and drydown leaves your skin scented with a sultry floral, ultra feminine fragrance. Tru Blooms Fountain of Roses is definitively an all-seasons perfume and one to reach for when feminine sensuality is what you wish to evoke!

Regarding the production of Tru Blooms Fountain of Roses, the perfume is part of The Tru Blooms initiative that trained over 150 Chicago residents in the skills required for urban farming. Flowers were planted in 22 gardens, both beautifying the cityscape and cutting taxpayers dollars. Through this project Tru Fragrance created partnerships with over two dozen organizations that were able to further their missions by participating in the creation of this perfume.

Savane Organics Product Review

The Makeup Examiner had never heard of Savane Organics and was obviously unfamiliar with this brand, so when I was approached to do a review truth be told I wasn’t overly enthusiastic and initially turned the brand down. But as I always believe that all things happen for a reason, I’m thrilled that I was asked a second time because I, and TME readers, would have missed out on a very interesting experience.

Beginning with the backstory of Savane Organic Skincare, in 2006 we find Harvard-educated Jennifer Peters aiming to create a brand that respects the planet, is committed to ethical production practices, organic formulations and sustainability. Jennifer's journey literally carried her across the African continent in search of the purest natural ingredients. The next four years were spent in research and development, forming partnerships with like-minded organic suppliers, and getting the stamp of approval from organizations such as Phyto Trade and Ecocert. In 2010, Savane Organic Skincare was quietly launched with an initial offering of six certified organic products.

Soothing Cleanser ($42- 100ml) made with Aloe Ferox, Rooibos, Moringa is certified natural (99%) and organic (67%) by Ecocert and contains 55% fair-trade content. I found the Soothing Cleanser to be just that, soothing and effective. After the first usage, my skin looked more radiant and felt amazing.

Gentle Exfoliant ($50-50ml) made with Rooibos, Marula and Jojoba is certified natural (99%) and organic (91%) by Ecocert and contains 5% fair-trade content. Savane Gentle Exfoliant smells absolutely lovely and adds to a relaxing spa experience. The exfoliant is gentle and left my skin feeling soft.

Purifying Toner ($40-100ml) made with Rooibos is certified natural (100%) and organic (78%) by Ecocert and contains 79% fair-trade content. Purifying Toner is packed with antioxidants and is my favorite product from the Savane Organic Skincare line. Given, The Makeup Examiner is addicted to toner, but with that said I’m super picky about toners. I want a toner that refreshes my skin without all the garbage … that’s exactly what I found with Purifying Toner.

Anti-Aging Lift Serum ($90-30 ml) made with Kigelia, Baobab, Buchu is certified natural (99%) and organic (76%) by Ecocert and contains 71% fair-trade content. Using the Anti-Aging Lift Serum twice a day for a week, I did notice that my skin looked more youthful. With a high dosage of hyaluronic acid, the Serum opens your pores to promote deep penetration and prepares your skin for the follow-on product, which for me was the Balancing Face Oil ($80-30 ml -- made with Marula, Kalahari Melon, Manketti is certified natural (100%) and organic (95%) by Ecocert and contains 45% fair-trade content) at night and the Protective Moisturizer ($85-50ml -- made with Baobab, Kigelia, Manketti, Yangu is certified natural (99%) and organic (89%) by Ecocert and contains 79% fair-trade content) in the morning.

The wasn’t a single product in the Savane Organic Skincareline that The Makeup Examiner disliked and the brand’s dedication to responsible practices, places them at the top of the list.
