Mirabella Beauty Launches Faerie For Holiday 2014

Mirabella Beauty is set to release Faerie, a luxurious limited edition four-piece collection that includes a long-lasting eyeshadow, a mineral-based highlighter and two high-shine lip-gloss shades. Faerie creates a romantic, ethereal, and shimmery look for the holiday season. With whimsical, yet chic packaging Mirabella Beauty’s Faerie Collection just may be our favorite collection of the season!

“The holidays are a time when women embrace a more glamorous look,” says Amber Bowen, Mirabella Creative Director. Amber shared that the inspiration behind Mirabella Beauty’s Faerie Collection was to create a collection that would be universally flattering, easily allow for day-to-night transition, and last throughout the days (and nights) of a hectic holiday schedule.

Mirabella Beauty’s Faerie Collection Includes:

Myth Visionary Long Wearing Eyeshadow ($29): The bronzed hued eyeshadow has the silkiest texture, which allows for easy application and rich, buildable color. Team TME loves the versatility with a light touch offering up an ethereal look for day and buildable coverage allowing for a bold, glamorous look for night. Plus, this is one of the few long-lasting eyeshadow formulas that haven’t irritated our eyes. Myth Visionary Long Wearing Eyeshadow is designed with high elastomeric powders help mask wrinkles with an optical blurring effect! Myth Visionary Long Wearing Eyeshadow is talc and paraben-free.

Swirling Pearl Brilliant ($40) – Is a mineral-based highlighter with Prismatech technology -- combining all the best features of baked, fluid and cream products for a soft, long-lasting texture that gives skin the perfect highlight. Again, super-silky texture that offers easy application. Swirling Pearl Brilliant is talc and paraben-free.

New Colour Luxe Lip Glosses in Gossamer and Luminosity ($26 each) - Colour Luxe Lip Gloss shades Gossamer (Soft Pink) and Luminosity (Clear Sparkle) offer three-dimensional, light reflecting pearls and a moisturizing, vitamin-enriched formula with anti-aging peptides. There isn’t a member of Team TME who doesn’t have a lip product obsession -- lip stick, tint, gloss, balm -- it matters not, which makes for both comradery and fighting. We loved both glosses, but found Luminosity to be incredibly versatile adding a gorgeous sheen over any hued lipstick. Colour Luxe Lip Glosses are free of parabens, lanolin, and castor oil.

Does Mirabelle Beauty Test On Animals? In the words of Mirabella Beauty owner John Maly, “We don't test on animals, just make up artists! But they are really pretty good about it. In fact, they do it willingly!” and an added bonus is Faerie is made in the USA. Faerie will be available in November online, at Mirabella Beauty and professional salons. Check out Mirabella Beauty on Facebook for exclusive offers and giveaways!

Hourglass Cosmetics Introduces Ambient Lighting Blush Palette

In early 2013, Hourglass Cosmetics launched a range of Ambient Lighting Powders designed to mimic universally flattering light sources by utilizing photoluminescent technology. Later that year, the brand launched Ambient Lighting Blush based upon a similar technology of light diffusion and offering buildable coverage. For any Hourglass Cosmetics fan -- and who wouldn’t be -- the news of the brand’s Ambient Lighting Blush Palette is nothing short of a whole lot of wonderful!

The Limited Edition Palette features three shades of Ambient Lighting Blush, which is the groundbreaking blush that creates seamless, soft-focused and multidimensional color. The Palette (USD $58 | CAD $67) features two of Hourglass’ best selling shades -- Luminous Flush and Mood Exposure, as well as a brand new shade, Incandescent Electra (Exclusive to the Ambient Lighting Blush Palette).

Ambient Lighting Blush Palette Shades:
  1. Luminous Flush: A champagne rose blush fused with Luminous Light to evoke a candlelit glimmer.
  2. Incandescent Electra (exclusive to the palette): A cool peach blush blended with Incandescent Light for a celestial glow.
  3. Mood Exposure: A soft plum blush fused with Mood Light to brighten the complexion
What Ambient Lighting Blush Offers:
  • Hourglass has fused Ambient Lighting Powder, the cutting-edge collection of finishing powders, with an array of vivid cheek colors, creating a hybrid product that is unique, contemporary and revolutionary.
  • Unlike traditional blush, which tends to be flat, Ambient Lighting Blush uses Photoluminescent Technology to exhibit depth and dimension.
  • The airy, lightweight powders contain optically transparent particles that amplify the colors to a multidimensional level- effectively reinventing the way you view blush.
  • Ambient Lighting Blush is designed to be paired with Ambient Lighting Powder. Using the two products together imbues the entire complexion with an otherworldly glow.
  • The hand-made powders are formulated using an advanced miscelare technique-which means “to mix” in Italian- creating the perfect balance of pigment and powder, and no two look alike.
  • Delivers a natural radiant finish and offers buildable color.

If you’re unfamiliar with Hourglass Cosmetics, let’s review a few things about the brand. Hourglass Cosmetics are free of parabens, talc, fragrance, nanoparticles and gluten. Plus No Animal Testing! Always a great start with any beauty brand. Hourglass Cosmetics Ambient Lighting Blush Palette will be available October 2014 at Barneys New York, Bergdorf Goodman, Net-A-Porter, Sephora, Space NK, and Hourglass Cosmetics.

Chantecaille Fall 2014 Color Collection and 15th Anniversary Celebration

15 years ago, Chantecaille Beauté launched its brand with the philosophy of making women feel beautiful and beautifully making a commitment to the environment through responsible practices and philanthropic endeavors. Chantecaille’s philosophies haven’t changed, and with that, the brand is celebrating its anniversary by launching another limited edition Eye Shade Trio as part of the Chantecaille Fall 2014 Color Collection.

Beginning with Chantecaille’s 15 Year Anniversary Eye Shade Trio ($68), which is housed in a refillable collector’s edition gunmetal palette and decorated with Sylvie Chantecaille’s signature, the trio embodies the iconic Chantecaille woman. Effortlessly complimenting the Fall 2014 runway trends, each sophisticated shade symbolizes an endangered species that urgently needs help.

  • Elephant – a deep, earthy aubergine that can be applied wet or dry to the crease or lash line.
  • Butterfly – a warm buttery vanilla that can be used to smooth and highlight the eyelid or brow bone.
  • Sea Turtle – a delicate copper infused with light-reflecting rose gold pearl.

Proceeds from each Anniversary Trio sold will be proudly donated to The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, Monarch Butterfly Fund and WIDECAST to help protect our endangered elephants, butterflies and sea turtles respectively. To learn more about the plight of the beautiful creatures represented in the Anniversary Trio, please visit Chantecaille Philanthropy.

Bliss Cheek Shade ($38) - Embossed with the signature Chantecaille Rose, this limited edition cheek shade is housed in a portable and refillable pebble. Made with micro-particles, cheek shades create a subtle blush of color. Enriched with anti-aging vitamins, the color adheres beautifully to the skin and blends so well it leaves no perceptible surface. Bliss – a hint of petal pink. A delicate color to complement the fall look.

Fairy Moss Hydra Chic ($35) - The ultra-moisturizing, botanical formula delivers up to 6 hours of long-wearing color with a satin smooth finish. Natural papaya and orchid extracts help soften lips while simultaneously providing anti-oxidant and anti-aging protection. Fairy Moss – the perfect nude with a touch of rose and a very on-trend fashion lip color for the season.

Mulberry Luminous Gloss ($34) - An extraordinary lip gloss formula that offers up to 6 hours of long-lasting shine. Rich texture, dramatic brilliance and innovative shiny polymers create a fluid 3-D glass-like effect for volume and shine with a superior adherence. Water-binding agents hydrate and smooth lips. Mulberry – a sheer burgundy with flecks of light-reflecting gold making for an approachable way to wear the bold berry lip seen on the fall runways.

Merlot Skin Care Review

Happy Summer lovelies! Okay, granted it may not exactly be a “happy” considering that summer is in full swing and we’d all probably rather be sitting beach or poolside. But, The Makeup Examiner has found a new skincare line --Merlot Skin Care-- that might just bring a smile (and glowing skin) to your face.

Although TME left the business world far behind her, business has never left her. And she points this out to emphasize the importance of good business practices, which is what she found with Merlot Skin Care. The brand produces all products in the USA, all products are made from procyanadolic oligimers’ (natural grape seed antioxidants), Merlot Skin Care does not test on animals, the company is family owned and operated, and lastly -- Merlot Skin Care offers top-notch customer service.

Ah, but you didn’t stop by to read about the business side of Merlot Skin Care did you? So, I’ll move onto the products. I was sent quite a few products from this skin care line for a Bridal Editorial that I’m working on, but I felt that Merlot deserved a review of its own.

Readers know that I love any true multi-purpose product, so I’m starting with Merlot Skin Care 100% Pure Grape Seed Oil ($8). Yesterday, I committed one of the biggest (and dumbest) beauty sins imaginable … I fell asleep in the sun and yes, it lead to sunburn. I applied 100% Pure Grape Seed Oil to my skin and experienced instant relief. To the best of my knowledge grape seed oil doesn’t offer any analgesic properties, but the oil soothed my skin nonetheless. Aside from adding hydration to my skin, Merlot’s Grape Seed Oil can be used to nourish cuticles, repair split ends, heal scars, replenish moisture after shaving, hydrate dry and cracked heals, and makes for a great massage oil.

Next up is Merlot Grape Seed Cleanser ($11), which contains no soap making this cleanser super gentle and perfect for sensitive skin. It effectively removed my makeup and left my skin feeling refreshed and hydrated. Moving onto what should be your next step in any solid skin care regimen … toner! Merlot Skin Care Hydrating Toner ($11) is lightly scented and left my skin feeling prepped for the next step in my skin care regimen. While Hydrating Toner an excellent toner and perfect for sensitive skin, I’m unlikely to give up my Pixi Glow Tonic anytime soon.

Moving onto the next product, Merlot Skin Care Grape Seed Moisturizer ($17). Although there isn’t any fragrance added to this amazing product, Grape Seed Moisturizer has this light and lovely natural scent. The moisturizer absorbs quickly and left my skin feeling soft, smooth and incredibly hydrated without any greasy feel. Merlot Skin Care Grape Seed Moisturizer works fabulously as a moisturizer and as a makeup primer!

Rounding out this review is Merlot Skin Care’s Purifying Peel Off Mask ($15). For as biased as I am against peel off masks, okay truth be told I haven’t touched a peel off mask in years, I was actually impressed with this one. Purifying Peel Off Mask is surprisingly gentle and left my skin with a healthy glow.

It’s a little cliché to state that Merlot Skin Care is like wine for the skin, but it’s true! Merlot Skin Care offers far more products then I’ve reviewed and you can find them online at Merlot.

GrandCentralBeauty Review

GrandCentralBeauty recently debuted its 3rd niche market skincare product, S.M.A.R.T. Skin Perfecting Mask, which was featured in Birchbox’s March Edition. While a relatively small company, GrandCentralBeautyseems to garnering some big results and a lot of attention. But, what’s all the fuss about? Co-Founders, Ginger King and Jackie Lee launched the brand in March 2013 with an easy concept to bring top-notch spa treatments into the home.

The first thing to note about GrandCentralBeauty is that their products are made with the US and they do not test on animals … only people. Furthermore, GrandCentralBeauty products are paraben-free, sulfate-free, and petrochemical-free. Currently, the brand offers three skincare products -- S.M.A.R.T. Skin Perfecting Mask ($75), S.M.A.R.T. Skin Perfecting Polisher ($38), and S.M.A.R.T. Skin Perfecting Serum+Primer ($68).

Beginning with the Skin Perfecting Mask, it’s easy to use and offers immediate results. Delivered in powder form with liquid booster, it’s as simple as combining the individually packaged powder and booster with cool water, applying to the face for 15 minutes and gently peeling off the mask. TME liked taking time for herself and relaxed during the 15-minutes. I experienced immediate results with smoother looking skin. Skin Perfecting Mask is unisex, so guys … don’t feel left out on this one.

Next up is S.M.A.R.T Skin Perfecting Polisher, which is an exfoliating peel using an exclusive formula containing multi-fruit acids including apple, lemon, sugarcane and orange; along with botanical extracts such as peony, and Japanese tobiko inspired, caviar-like beads. Apply a dime-sized amount onto clean, dry face. Massage face lightly and for 30 seconds until clear sponge beads emerge. Remove gently with fingertips. Polishers can be irritating, but this is one of the few that I’ve found that is gentle and effective!

Lastly, which was just launched in March 2014, is S.M.A.R.T. Skin Perfecting Serum+Primer. This was my favorite product from GrandCentralBeauty! Skin Perfecting Serum+Primer is oil-free and silica-free, and is a multi-use product serving as both a primer and moisturizer. Offering instant hydration, it gave my skin an instant glow and helped my makeup stay put all day. Skin Perfecting Serum+Primer is amazing for under eye circles and puffiness too! It took about a week to see a decrease in the dark circles under my eyes, but this isn’t unusual for skincare and products, and is actually a miracle for The Makeup Examiner who is constant battle against those under eye circles.

The “S.M.A.R.T.” stands for: S – Smooths; M – Moisturizes; A – Anti-aging; R – Redness Reduction; and T – Tones. True! GrandCentralBeauty products are available online at Birchbox and GrandCentraBeauty and select retail locations. GrandCentralBeauty is hosting a launch event at Clyde's. Choiselle Artisanal Bath and Body Care Review: Earth Month Celebration

Happy Earth Month! Choiselle bath and body are products are the second review of eco-friendly beauty products for the celebration of Earth Month. First and foremost, The Makeup Examiner chose to review Choiselle because of the brand’s green standards. Choiselle uses organic ingredients selected from small organic farms, which helps increase sustainable living for all involved.

Every good story begins with a good back-story. Nydia Norville, founder of Choiselle, became frustrated when she couldn't find pure products to help alleviate her severely dry skin. Frustration led to action. Remembering her childhood and watching her grandmother mix up skincare and medicinal remedies, using ingredients from Grandma’s backyard garden, Nydia began “cooking” up concoctions in her kitchen.

“I tried everything and nothing really worked, especially in the winter, so I decided to try to make something myself. In the process of researching different ingredients commonly used by existing brands, I noticed that an overwhelming amount of brands mislead their customers by making claims to produce products that are natural or organic but instead, the ingredients listed are mostly fillers and synthetic ingredients that are known to be harmful,” says Nydia. What Nydia is referring to is the common practice of “greenwashing”.

In January, Choiselle launched a line of prestige natural bath and body care products made from certified organic ingredients such as shea butter, sunflower oil, essentials oils and safflower oil. All products are free of parabens, petroleum, and toxins that are known to disrupt the natural balance of the skin. Nydia opted instead to utilize plant-based ingredients that have been used for centuries to soothe and protect the skin.

Choiselle is a small brand in regards to its current offerings, but that is all that is small about the luxurious, skin-nourishing products. Choiselle offers Body Butter ($35), Bath & Body Oil ($25), and Body Lotion ($42) and all formulas are available in three scents -- lavender, lemongrass and ylang ylang. The packing is minimal, yet sophisticated and comes in reusable/recyclable glass.

What’s brilliant about offering body butter, oil and lotion is that our skin needs different levels of moisture at various times. The scents themselves are everything that one expects from true essential oils that add to the transformative experience. The Makeup Examiner wasn’t disappointed with a single product in the line, but her must-have for summer is definitely Choiselle Bath & Body Oil, which you can mist on and go!

So, do the products work? YES! From outside packing to inside product, Choiselle offers a prestige, artisanal line of bath and body products. Choiselle Bath and Body products are available at Choiselle. Choiselle will be expanding its product line with the release of lip balms, shampoos, conditioners and shower gels!

Shea Terra Organics Review: Earth Month Celebration

Happy Earth Month! Well … every month is indeed Earth Month, but Earth Day itself is celebrated on April 22ndand with this, The Makeup Examiner has chosen to spotlight Eco-Friendly products throughout the month. In celebration of Mother Earth, and to bring focus to the fact that we do not have to sacrifice product quality in order to achieve a respect for our planet, TME offers you the first review in The Makeup Examiner’s Earth Month Celebration!

TME has previously reviewed Shea Terra Organics, but this brand was impressive enough to highlight again. To begin, founder Tammie Umbelhas spent the last 15 years working with local communities, in Africa, identifying ingredients linked with ancient beauty traditions and creating skin care products to share with the world. But, it is the way in which Tammie procures these ingredients that set the standard for eco-friendly brands.

By adhering to fair trade practices, Shea Terra Organics directly contributes to the sustainability of local economies. And by using Certified Wildlife Friendly ingredients, the brand produces quality skin care products without harming the Earth or exploiting its resources.

Now that you know a little information about the business practices of Shea Terra Organics, let’s get to a few of the products.

Shea Terra Organics Moroccan Mud-Tox Body Cleanse in Menthe Tea Vanilla ($18) is a luxurious at-home spa treatment that is a perfect avenue to detox and shed that winter skin. Delivered in powder form, Moroccan Mud-Tox Body Cleanse is mixed with water to create a paste. You apply the paste all over for a full detox, or to target areas, and after approximately 10 minutes, rinse to reveal refreshed skin.

Shea Terra Organics Argan & Olive Nourishing 2-n-1 Body Scrub Dark Amber ($18) is a 2-in-1 cream scrub that exfoliates with natural, organic ingredients and moisturizes skin in the process. Dark Amber offers a relaxing scent, reminiscent of what you would experience at the spa. Apply to wet skin, rinse and baby soft skin is revealed.

Shea Terra Organics Jasmine Ylang Ylang Relaxing Bath Oil Drops ($20) is a TME favorite. Add a few droppers full of this exotic fragrance to your bath and let the relaxing scents take effect.

Chloe Elyce Skin Care Review

Hello lovelies! Recently, The Makeup Examiner was approached by Chloe Elyce Skin Care to review the brand’s Chloe Elyce Travel Kit. I can’t explain why, but my first reaction was to decline. Perhaps this initial reaction was due in part to the company’s mother/daughter duo, Mary Anne Hawrylak and Chloe Johnston, being a fashion focused team and TME’s thought that this was yet another amateur endeavor into the world of beauty.

The Makeup Examiner is glad that she didn’t take a pass on the review. Let’s begin, well, at the beginning. Mary Anne Hawrylak and Chloe Johnston of the Philadelphia based CJ Tours, are well-traveled ladies, which is where the story of Chloe Elyce Skin Care begins. Chloe and Mary Anne sought to find organic, cruelty-free skincare products for their travels. Struggling to find a very specific type of product for their journeys abroad, the ladies enlisted the help of board certified anti-aging specialists, Drs. Michael and Veruschka Torosian to create the Chloe Elyce Skin Care line.

The Chloe Elyce Travel Kit ($70) includes:
  • Mist Me? Botanical Hydrating Face Mist
  • Bisous Botanical Lip Cream
  • Gel Fraiche Cleanser
  • Crème Fraiche Moisturizer
  • Luxury Cotton Washcloth
  • Travel Case

Mist Me? Botanical Hydrating Face Mist is a luxurious, refreshing moisturizing toner, with a heavenly scent. Packed with good stuff like, extracts of Witch Hazel, Organic Calendula, Organic Chamomile, Organic Echinacea, Organic Lavender, Argan Oil, Essential Oils of Peru Balsam, Rose Absolute, Rosemary, and Grapefruit Seed Extract, the versatile mist can be used after cleansing, over makeup or anytime you want to give your skin a quick hydration.

Bisous Botanical Lip Cream smells so delicious that it’s tempting to eat. Nourishing and moisturizing Huckleberry and Pomegranate soothe and protect lips along with organic Jojoba oil, coconut oil, almond oils, Montana beeswax, and Aloe Vera to keep your pout looking pretty on the go. Bisous Botanical Lip Cream has great cushion and delivers a nice sheen.

Crème Fraiche is a rejuvenating botanical facial cream that is gentle and another Chloe Elyce product packed with skin-loving ingredients such as rose and lavender hydrosols, grapeseed, and fresh royal jelly.

Gel Fraiche Cleanser gently cleanses without stripping the skin. Gel Fraiche is fortified with organic Aloe Vera Gel, coconut oil, lemon extract, avocado oil, and vitamins A, C and E. This versatile cleaner can be used on hair and body, making for the perfect cleanser for any traveler.

The Chloe Elyce Travel Kit is the perfect travel companion, offering all the necessary items one would need for quality skincare while traveling. Each skin care product can be purchased individually at Chloe Elyce and while your there, check out the vintage shop! Chloe Elyce Skin Care products are organic, cruelty-free and made in the United States. Parent company, CJ Tours participates in socially responsibleendeavors!

How toxic are your cosmetics? New apps aim to help you find out

While many of us take great care with what were put into our bodies, we may not give a second thought to what we’re putting on our bodies. A 2007 report from The Campaign For Safe Cosmetics(TCFSC) found that a whopping 61% of lipsticks contained high levels of lead, and a follow-up study conducted by the FDA found lead levels four times higher than the levels found in the TCFSC study.

Partners of TCFSC, the D.C. based Environmental Working Group (EWG), has worked diligently to inform consumers about toxins that they’re exposed to in their daily lives and have placed a strong focus on the cosmetics industry. In 2004, EWG launched a database called Skin Deep, which catalogs approximately 78,000 products that contain potentially hazardous ingredients.

Taking the conveyance of information one step further toward convenience, EWG is set to release the SkinDeep App within the next month. The app will be available for both iOS and Android devices, and users of the app will be able to view product ingredients and view product ratings through barcode scanning or access the Skin Deep database.

In August, the Think Dirty appwas launched and is similar to EWG’s Skin Deep app. Launched as a free app in the iPhone store, the Think Dirty app offers users that ability to scan the barcodes of more than 12,000 personal care items. After scanning an item, the app’s “Dirty Meter” will then rate the product to determine whether it's dirty or clean and recommend alternative products.

The Think Dirty app is an extension of the Think Dirty Project, which was born after Founder and CEO Lily Tse watched Annie Leonard’s 8-minute video, “Story of Cosmetics”. Due to family history of cancer, Tse set out on a journey to research the causes behind breast cancer, including ingredients found in cosmetic and personal care products. For more information about EWG, the Think Dirty Project or to download the Think Dirty app, simply click on the hyperlinks throughout the article to be taken directly to the sites.

Waxelene Seeks Crowdfunding for Lip Tube

Waxelene, the number one petroleum jelly alternative for beauty, announced today, September 18, that the brand is seeking crowdfunding for the Waxelene Lip Tube. For those familiar with Waxelene, which currently comes in a jar and a flip-top tube, this is exciting news!

The Makeup Examiner has been waiting for Waxelene to offer a lip tube, as it is my go to product for dry lips. Waxelene has been looking to offer its product in a lip tube delivery, but a minimum production run is 100,000, which takes capital … serious capital. This desire to bring customers the very best has led Waxelene to start a crowdfunding campaign via Indiegogo.

“This is the form factor that is requested most often,” said Todd Cooper, CEO of Waxelene. “Waxelene is really effective on dry lips and the Lip Tube will make it easier to carry around and apply. We’ve wanted to offer this for a while, but a minimum production run is 100,000 and that takes capital. We’ve watched other companies raise money to execute on product ideas using crowdfunding and we thought – why not us? ”. My sentiments exactly!

Waxelene contributors will be the first to tote around the new Waxelene Lip Tube. The larger Waxelene flip tube is already a top seller in Whole Foods (production for that form factor was funded through Whole Foods’ Local Producer Loan Program) and there is a growing fan base of Waxelene users. The company is hopeful that Waxelene fans and friends will put their money where their lips are – and rally behind Waxelene’s Lip Tube campaign.
