Fall 2014 Hair Color Trends with Celebrity Colorist Marco Pelusi

It may be difficult to think of fall while we’re all enjoying the gorgeous summer weather, most especially this past week when the weather seems as if it was order off of the “perfect summer weather” menu. But, soon enough we will be surrendering our breezy dresses and now’s the time to look ahead and checkout the forecast for the perfect hues for our lovely tresses. Who better to check in with then world-renowned celebrity colorist, Marco Pelusi of Marco Pelusi Hair Studio in West Hollywood? Which is precisely what I did!

In a TME exclusive, Marco offers readers the hottest trends and amazing hair colors for Fall 2014. Aside from being the “Master of Color,” Marco truly believes in making women feel beautiful and this is why The Makeup Examiner went straight to Marco for his expert opinion. Read on to find out what hues work for blondes, brunettes and redheads, as well as expert color care advice for the cooler months.

Yvonne: I’d read somewhere that Platinum Blonde and Metallics are the hot trends for Fall 2014. What do you think of this?

Marco: I definitely think that platinum blonde is making a comeback these days. The cycle fashion tells us that a trend [begins] as avant-garde, moves into fashionable, goes mainstream and then ends as outdated. And, goes back around to avant-garde. This has happened with the platinum blonde. It was almost been seen as outdated for a while, but I think it's been creeping in. Meryl Streep sort of hinted at it a few years back in “The Devil Wears Prada” -- when she wore her solid light hair -- and at that time, platinum blonde was still outdated but moving toward avant-garde. As with all trends, it takes a few years [to become mainstream], and now we are seeing more all-over blondes. So, yes to the all-over platinum blonde! Metallics I'm not so sure about.

For several seasons ombre has ruled as THE hair color trend and I really thought that the trend would finally go away. But with mega-stars like Jared Leto, quite literally rockin’ this look, and Jessica Biel sporting soft ombre locks, is it still a hot trend? What are you seeing as on-trend for Fall 2014?

Marco: We are still feeling the bleeding in of the "sombre" … or, that is, the softer, summer/fall ombre. I had a strong feeling this trend would stick with us in its various forms, as it takes on a new feel, as time moves forward. This trend moves more into the ends being slightly sun kissed or tipped with a gradually lighter color -- this differs greatly from the previous strong line of demarcation from the old ombre -- where the hair literally went from black to blonde. This is a much softer progression, and in my opinion, is quite beautiful, and definitely feels on-trend throughout the fall.

Who’s wearing the sombre look right now?

Marco: My dear friend and client Carol Alt has a version of this look, more or less, right now. Her ends gradually, beautifully lighten up as you see her darker hair progress throughout. Additionally, I have to admit, I'm a huge Bravo fan. I'm acquainted with many people involved with the shows, and right now, Carole Radziwill of “The Real Housewives of New York” is definitely wearing a sombre.  Her hair beautifully starts out darker and bleeds into light, with gradual transition.

With many projects together, I know that you love your redheads and you are hands-down THE color expert. What about blondes and brunettes? What are the on-trend hues that will transition from summer into the cooler months?

Marco: Yes I happen to love reds -- also red coloring is perhaps the most challenging for stylists/colorists to achieve -- that is, to capture a really, really good red -- and therefore my voice is quite specific in this area. However, I do create my own blonding/highlighting techniques. I’ve just returned from my annual presentations at the International Beauty Shows in Vegas, where I demonstrated this technique to hundreds of professional hairstylists. (Readers, Marco truly is a master at color and offers instructional DVDs on his world-renowned technique) The blondes who are on-trend will gradually add more lowlights -- deeper, richer, darker tones throughout their blonde hair -- to reflect the change in seasons. The brunettes can consider adding deeper and warmer tones -- again to reflect the change not only in the season, but the fall colors of the leaves, and everything around us. Brunettes can add a touch of deep gold’s and hints of reds/auburns; and moving into winter we can begin moving into cooler and darker browns.

You’ve taught us that color care is so important. Are there different steps to take during the cooler months to maintain our color?

Marco: Indoor heat is always a culprit for drying hair as the fall is upon us. It's time for deep conditioning treatments. Nourish the hair as much as possible. Find a deep conditioning formula that works for you. Shampoo your hair, rinse, squeeze the moisture from your hair, towel blot, and apply the deep conditioner. Allow it to sit for 30 minutes, preferably in a warmer or steamier area. Then rinse. Additionally, when the weather turns colder, and our indoor heat goes up, applying a leave-in conditioner can become your friend!

Okay my lovelies, there you have it from the color God himself. Sombre will continue to be a very on-trend look for Fall/Winter 2014-15. Going platinum blonde is very in vogue and brunettes should embrace the natural colors of fall. Color care is vital for keeping those locks looking lovely and Marco has created a line of cruelty-free hair care products especially for colored treated hair, which you can check out by visiting Marco Pelusi Studios. The product that I can’t do without is Marco Anti-Frizz Leave-In Conditioner with Collagen Color Guard, as it’s not only the perfect product to feign off the environmental conditions that cause our hair to go bonkers in the cooler months, but also the best leave-in for year-round! You can keep up-to-date with Marco on Twitter and Facebook!

American Beauty

4th of July is a time for everyone in America to rejoice in their independence. American Pride lights the evening skies on America’sIndependence Day in the form of fireworks, family and friends gather to enjoy traditional American fare, and we all celebrate the beauty of red, white, and blue. Speaking of American fare, checkout a few Independence Day Cocktail Recipes, as you peruse American Beauty Trends throughout history and see how the trends of yesteryear have made their way back around!

1920’s: Bobbed hair and finger waves were the “it” hairstyle during this time. Anyone who has attended school for Cosmetology can attest to learning how to create finger waves! Makeup was worn bold for the first time as an acceptable attractive trend. Black eyeliner was applied generously to add to the dramatic look of flapper dresses. Eyebrows were usually penciled in high on the face and kept thin. Powder was used generously to keep skin looking pale.

1930’s: Hollywood influenced beauty heavily (as it does today). Women wanted their hair color to match the hair of their favorite on-screen actresses. Platinum blondes, redheads, and brunettes each had their Hollywood icon to emulate. Powders for pale skin lost their popularity and women used foundations that matched their complexions. The “cupid’s bow” became a must-do, with women lining their upper lip for the perfect pout.

1940’s: Brows began to return to a slightly more natural look versus pencil thin, and a bold brow was popular. Red lipstick made its way to become a true beauty staple for all women. Rosy cheeks, achieved by blush, were a popular makeup technique. This is the time matching your nail polish to your outfit became very popular and leaving the “half-moon” at the bottom of you nail unpainted was the style.

1950’s: During the ‘50s women were expected never to leave the house looking any less perfect. Even a quick trip to the market meant full-on market and coiffed hair. Loose soft curls and waves grazed the heads of all women. Peaches and pinks were now incorporated widely into women’s beauty routines. Think soft peach cheeks with a pink pout. Lip liners were now used to accentuate the mouth.

1960’s: This era belonged to Twiggy. Eyes were everything, the bigger the better. Fake lashes became a must-have and no look was ever complete with many coats of mascara. Hair was either kept as a short pixie cut for that mod-girl look or long and flowing with minimal product for the ‘60s hippie look.

1970’s: Farrah Fawcett influenced women’s hair greatly at this time. Long layers and classic feathery style was what most women wanted. For the first time ever women began using bronzers and self-tanners. The bronzed look was very in during this time.

1980’s: There wasn’t enough hairspray on the planet. Big was in. Big hair, big shoulder pads … it was bad. Blue eyeshadows and bold colored liners became very trendy. Thanks to Brook Shields, the best brows were now thick and natural.

1990’s: Grunge and androgyny were the two looks that dominated the ‘90’s. The “bed-head” look became very in vogue. Minimal makeup was used amongst women. The classic 90’s haircut was “the Rachel” named after Jennifer Anniston’s character on the hit TV show Friends.

2000’s: Beauty takes a bit from history with an added modern spin. Hair extensions are very popular, as well as lash extensions. While many women go for bronzers, contouring, and lots of makeup, just as many women are opting for a natural look in their beauty routines. The biggest trend, and one that I hope will remain, is great looking skin. The best beauty “secret” that will be forever timeless is taking care of one’s skin!

Happy 4th of July Beautynistas! Have fun, stay safe, and remain beautiful!

Summer Hair Trends

It’s Memorial Day Weekend and the unofficial start of SUMMER! Oh yeah baby! I am so over cold weather and this past winter’s polar vortex. Now that the warmer weather is here, it’s time to take a look at Summer Hair Trends 2014. Taking a look at what was stomping down the runways for Spring/Summer 2014 we saw a myriad of looks. In conjunction with what was seen during FW, The Makeup Examiner reached out to Celebrity Stylist Sarah Potempaand asked her to weigh in on what’s hot. So, what hairstyles are truly sizzling for summer? Read on to find out!

Accessorize - SS14 is the season to get creative with your hair accessories. From floral garlands to pretty headbands and scarves, make a bad hair day into a good one by adding something special.

Beach Waves – Seen at Versace and Marc by Marc Jacobs - Definitely a big trend for summer, this laid back look is easy to do and the more randomly placed the waves are, the better. For the lazy ladies, creating this look is as easy braiding slightly damp hair (two large braids - one on each side) before you hop into bed. For those with medium and shorter lengths, you can still achieve these soft, face-framing waves. Apply a minimal amount of leave-in conditioner like Marco Anti-Frizz Leave-In Conditioner ($35) and invest in Remington’s T|Studio Silk Ceramic Multistyler ($34.99) that comes with a Curl Guide sleeve for the perfect beach waves. Keep locks looking lovely with a spritz of Shu Uemura Texture Wave ($28).

Low Ponytail – Seen at Altuzarra, Lanvin, Jason Wu - Summer is always amazing, but sometimes the humidity brings bad hair days. An easy solution is the simple, chic Low Ponytail. It’s as easy as securing the ponytail at the nape of your neck and the look can be versatile. Opt for a super sleek look that can be achieved with a high gloss finishing spray like Sexy Hair 450 Headset ($18) or a casual, whimsical look that is achieved by gently moving the ponytail from right to left before securing at the nape of your neck. Product

Tip For Blondes: Remove brassy tones from blonde with Shu Uemura Art Of Hair Color Lustre ($58).

Sarah’s Picks:

Polished Waves – This is a look that celebrities are always requesting. And a simple, chic wave is definitely in style this summer. To get the look, prep your hair with a great deep conditioner, like Aussie 3Minute Miracle Shine ($5.99). The added moisture and shine is perfect to counter the extreme heat and all the salt and chlorine your hair will be exposed to this summer. The concept behind a simple wave is that the curls always wrap away from your face to open it up and look effortless. After you curl your hair, spray Aussie Mega flexible hairspray to a boar bristle/nylon brush to smooth the curls into waves.

Braided Bun – Pull your hair into a high ponytail. Separate out a section, create a 3-strand braid and secure it with a clear elastic. Smooth the rest of the ponytail with Aussie Miraculously Smooth Anti-Frizz Cream and roll it up into a bun with the Wrap Up ($12). Then take the braid and wrap it around the bun for a cool summer style.

Half-Up Top Knot – This is a super cute summer style that works with your waves, but keeps you cool! Take your hair and pull half of it up with the Half-Up bun tool. Spray Aussie Sprunch hairspray to add texture to the waves.

Gothic Lolita and Rockstar Wigs Launch ‘Doll-Look’ Cosmetic Line

The unconventional team of Charles and Jennifer Reger, who are also the couple behind Gothic Lolita and Rockstar wigs, have expanded their styling into the cosmetics market. The duo’s new offering, Dolluxe Cosmetics, is an expansion of their Lolita Fashion style wigs. Inspired by Japanese street style, Dolluxe invites the freak show to continue.

Charles Reger explains that, “When speaking to customers about what they wanted in a new line of cosmetics, many said they wanted the look of movie stars Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe with their flawless light complexions.” Reger continued with, “Most of today's market [tries] to sell products that make women appear tan or darker, when what they really want is that beaming look of the silver screen.”

The line consists of multiple styles of false eyelashes designed to make the eye pop into a “doe-eyed cutesy appearance”:

  • Lashing Out Loud - dynamic false lashes with a short, natural layer and six longer pieces designed to set off your eye and show up with any makeup, lighting, or style
  • Harajuku Honey - stunning side-swept lash with shorter lashes for the inner eye turn to longer lashes that frame the eye
  • Born to Flirt - designed to match perfectly with your natural lashes, it elongates them by adding extra, longer layers
  • All Dolled Up - features lashes in varying length to give you a red-carpet ready look every time
  • Wishful Winking - unique strip lash with a shorter band that is designed to be worn at the end of the lash line for a dramatic, doll-like effect
  • Whiplash Attack's - beautiful look is made with slightly spaced, side-swept lashes that create a glamorous effect that blends perfectly with and elongates your natural lashes
  • Underlash A - a unique strip bottom lash, designed to be worn in either direction
  • Underlash B - a striking strip bottom lash designed to complement your eye shape, with longer, thicker lashes offset by shorter ones
Reading the eyelash description and viewing the photos, it’s unclear how Dolluxe meets the needs of a customer’s desire to emulate Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe or the stars’ flawless light complexions. Furthermore, the market is far from dominated by products “that make women appear tan or darker” and perhaps Reger needs to conduct legitimate market research prior to pulling statements out of the air. Anyway, for those that desire the doll-look, visit the Dolluxe site.

Redken Runway Report With Hair How-Tos From Guido

The Fall/Winter shows from Milan may be long over, but winter is not. So with quite a few months left in the season, it’s time to dive into those stunning looks straight from the runways and here to tell us the how-tos is Redken Creative Consultant Guido Palau … better known as Guido.

Versace - Guido created the style for the Versace show in Milan by taking a “boyish approach to feminine hair” with a punk edge. He started with a rich blow-dry that held true to the glamour, luxury, and sensuality that the house stands for, but then added one distinctly new element. The “comb up” he sculpted in the front proved it might just all be in the details, giving the final style just the right amount of rock n' roll. “I didn't use a flat iron on this look as it's not supposed to be stick straight, but it's not a big bouncy blow-out either,” said Guido.

Get the Look: Redken Products Used - forceful 23 super strength finishing spray, satinwear 02 prepping blow-dry lotion, hardware 16 super strong gel

  1. Apply satinwear 02 prepping blow-dry lotion to damp hair and blow-dry with a large round brush for a smooth straight look
  2. Create a clean deep left side part with a tail comb, and then tuck the left side behind the ear and clip in place
  3. Apply a small amount of hardwear 16 super strong gel to the hair starting at the forehead and along the part and then combing the right section slightly up and back into shape
  4. Remove the clip on the left side and finish the style by applying forceful 23 super strength finishing spray to a comb and then lightly combing over style to keep flyaways at bay and create a smooth, glossy finished look

Bottega Veneta - Guido created a hairstyle as irresistible as the beautiful Bottega Veneta collection. Guido said designer Tomas Maier wanted the girls to have a “real hairstyle” for the show and the end result was an overall look of pure elegance. “My point of reference for [this style] was actresses in both the 40s and 70s. The key to these soft, voluminous curls is the amount of product you use and also to focus on using a small curling iron, like the 1/2 inch irons that were used, and curling small sections of hair,” said Guido.

Get the Look: Redken Products Used - guts 10 root targeted volume spray foam, iron shape 11 thermal setting mist

  1. Apply guts 10 root targeted volumizing spray foam from roots to ends to create volume and a base for styling and rough blow-dry hair
  2. When dry, make a deep side part and then mist hair all over with iron shape 11 thermal setting mist to protect hair from the heat and help the curls hold their shape
  3. Start to pin curl hair in small sections with a 1/2-inch barrel curling iron, making sure to leave the top 2-3 inches on the drown uncurled. Pin each curl to the head with setting pins as you curl
  4. When finished curling the whole head, leave to set and when then when hair has cooled unpin each curl
  5. When finished unpinning each curl, run fingers lightly through curls and then gently brush out with a boar bristle brush for more volume
  6. Backbrush the top front section and then sweep the section across the forehead and secure in place with a bobby pin

Roberto Cavalli and Jil Sander - Guido referred to the “Cavalli woman” when describing the super shiny, easygoing, and ultimately “Cavalli-chic” style he created for the show. He cited the pure, minimal “Jil Sander girl” when explaining the sleek, glistening pony he created for Jil Sander's show, emphasizing a tie to the consistently relevant, modern styles she creates in reference to none other than “her woman”.

Roberto Cavalli - Get the Look:

  1. Start by making a center part on damp hair and then blow-dry straight with a boar bristle brush
  2. Over-apply Redken Diamond Oil Shatterproof Shine Intense from lengths to ends when hair is dry, finishing with Redken control addict 28 high control hairspray and then a generous mist of Redken shine flash 02 glistening mist for a very strong, shiny look

Jil Sander - Get the Look:

  1. Apply Redken satinwear 02 prepping blow-dry lotion to damp hair and blow-dry hair straight
  2. Apply Redken hardwear 16 super strong gel to only the crown of the head, applying section by section and combing straight back (no part), being sure not the pull the comb all the way through the lengths as the ponytail should not have gel
  3. Secure hair into a low, tight ponytail at the nape of the neck with an elastic, and then take one section of hair and wrap around elastic, securing with a bobby pin.
  4. Spray the hair in the ponytail with Redken iron shape 11 finishing thermal spray and then flatiron the ponytail stick-straight
  5. Finish entire style with Redken shine flash 02 glistening mist focusing on the crown so the finished style has a slick, wet finish

Dolce & Gabbana – For the D&G show, Guido created a soft, romantic up-do that looked truly fit for a queen … or at the very least, fit for models dressed in the beautiful Byzantine-themed show. “This elegant style is another variation of the Dolce & Gabbana woman this season, playing on that [Italian] idea of softness, romance, and a certain cinematic, womanly beauty. I took inspiration from the idea of an iconic woman with a kind of natural Italian allure- think the actress Sofia Loren or the women in the 1960 film la Dolce Vita,” said Guido.

Get the Look: Redken Products Used - quick tease 15 backcombing finishing spray, shine flash 02 glistening mist, guts 10 root targeted volume spray foam
  1. Apply guts 10 root targeted volume spray foam to damp hair from roots to ends and blow-dry with a round brush
  2. Add quick tease 15 backcombing finishing spray to the crown section by section, holding each section for a few seconds to let it dry before moving onto the next
  3. After the quick tease 15 has dried completely, backcomb hair with an oval boar bristle brush for light, airy volume throughout the crown
  4. Create a 1 inch part that's slightly off center and then gently brush hair from front to back starting behind the 1 inch parted section in front, folding into a chignon flat against the head at the nape of the neck and securing with pins
  5. Spray style with shine flash 02 glistening mist for a glossy finish

The Makeup Examiner’s Fall 2013 Nail Trends Guide

Perhaps some people are so over seeing nail art, but one peruse on Pinterest and you’ll happily see that the nail art trend isn’t going away anytime soon. As The Makeup Examiner has written before, nails are the final frontier of acceptable self-expression. While we may not break out our sexy red lipstick or our favorite pair of funky earrings to work, we can still sport expressive nails and no one is likely to say anything.

Although nail art is a form of unique self-expression, it’s time to change up the colors, designs, and check out the new nail lacquer offerings for Fall 2013. To bring you current with what’s in store for your manicure, The Makeup Examiner has put together a list of the best Fall 2013 nail trends. And, oh my, brands have been hard at work creating everything from easy-to-use textured finishes to insane holographic shine, and amazing seasonal colors.

Oxblood - This deep, rich red is a TME favorite and is a color that will carry all the way through winter. Pictured are Tom Ford Beauty Nail Lacquer in Bordeaux Lust ($32), Marc Jacobs Beauty Enamored High-Shine Nail Lacquer in Jezebel ($18) and Zoya Nail Polish in Janice ($8).

Navy -NARS Nail Polish in 413 BLKR ($19), Essie Nail Polish in After School Boy Blazer ($8), and OPI Nail Lacquer in Incognito in Sausalito ($6.95).

Amethyst - Lancôme Vernis in Love in Purple Fiction ($15), Zoya Nail Polish in Neve ($8) and China Glaze Nail Lacquer in Charmed I'm Sure ($3.99) all offer a perfect breakaway from bright purple.

Coffee -The best way to describe this color trend is “Coffee the way you take it!” Some days The Makeup Examiner likes it straight up like Illamasqua Nail Varnish in Taint ($17) and sometimes it’s more like SpaRitual Nail Lacquer in UnComplicated ($12). No matter how you like your coffee, stick with the warm tones in this hue and you can’t go wrong.

Burnt Orange - Initially, bright orange dominated everything from lipstick to blusher to polish for Summer 2013, now that we’re moving into the cooler months, burn it! Butter London Nail Lacquer in Sunbaker ($15), Priti Nail Polish in Giant Granadilla ($13.50) and Ciate London Nail Polish in Skinny Dip ($15) offer the perfect hues of Burnt Orange for Fall 2013.

Steel Grey - Maybelline Color Show Nail Lacquer in Pedal to the Metal and Impeccable Greys ($3.99 each) and RBG Nail Color in Steel ($16) offer multiple options for this season’s grey hue

Metallic Colors - Estée Lauder Pure Color Long Lasting Nail Lacquer - Tom Pecheux's Metal Mania ($20 each), Topshop Nail Polish in Hart of Gold ($12), OPI Nail Lacquer in Peace, Love, and OPI ($9), Orly Nail Lacquer in Angel Rain ($8), and Essie Nail Polish in For the Twill of It ($8). This array of metallic shades shows the versatility and pure fun of this season’s trend. Metallic will easily carry you through into the winter months too!

Texture Me - For those that love textured nail polishes and lacquers, this season has no shortage of offerings. From matte finish glitter to high gloss sequin, you are only bound by your imagination when it comes to textured polishes. Pictured here are Sally Hansen Fuzzy Coat Nail Color in Tight Knit and Sally Hansen Sugar Coat in Sugar Fix ($5.99 each).

Fall Hair Color Trends With Celebrity Colorist Marco Pelusi

As summer fades into fall, and we surrender our flowy dresses, it’s time to change up our tresses with fall appropriate hair color hues. So on Aug. 29, The Makeup Examiner checked in with world-renowned celebrity colorist, Marco Pelusi of Marco Pelusi Hair Studio in West Hollywood. In a TME exclusive, Marco offers readers the hottest trends and amazing hair colors for Fall 2013. Aside from being the “Master of Color,” Marco truly believes in making women feel beautiful and this is why The Makeup Examiner went straight to Marco for the hottest Fall 2013 hair colors.

The Makeup Examiner: For several seasons ombre has ruled as the hair color trend. Will we see this trend for Fall 2013?

Marco Pelusi: When the ombre trend first arrived, it was rather extreme. Frankly, I believe the trend occurred simply because a celebrity, or two, got caught in a photograph with their dark roots showing. A photographer probably quickly snapped a shot of this … and it simply caught on. I think Sarah Jessica Parker was the first one way, way back in her “Sex and the City” days. The trend caught on, and became extreme, with women wearing super dark roots and super blonde midlengths and ends.

So, what do you see happening to the ombre trend?

What's occurring now, as does with most trends, is a softened, refined version of the ombre for Fall 2013. Whether you're blonde, brunette, or even red, this is the color trend that's hot for fall. A deeper base/root color, but with a gradual lightening of the hair with soft highlights strategically placed several inches away from the scalp. Essentially, the highlights blend in softly.

Who’s wearing this look right now?

Some celebs that are wearing this look right now are Kate of England, Khloe Kardashian, and Rachel Bilson. Rachel Bilson has always had some version of ombre for years, and is now wearing the softened ombre. The softened ombre is the hot color trend for Fall 2013!

How can readers get the softened ombre?

When you're at your hair colorist/stylist next time, ask for some soft highlights throughout the last few inches of your hair. For the trend to truly work, your hair needs to be just about to hit your shoulders, or longer.

For a general seasonal color transition, what would you recommend? What’s hot in hair color for Fall 2013?

As autumn approaches, it's time for us [to go to deeper hues]. It's the time of rich burnt oranges, rusts, rich red hues -- gone are the days of the yellow brightness of the summer sun. We must reflect this in our hair color.

Marco recommends the following:

  • Blondes – Adding a touch of deeper golden lowlights are a grand idea, to create a buttery blonde and add richness and depth to that old bright summer blonde.
  • Redheads – More of a cooler red is a good idea -- tell your hair colorist to add just a drop of blue into your bright yellow orange summer red formula -- just to cool it off a bit and become more autumnal -- a touch of auburn.
  • Brunettes – Get rid of any brightness or faded areas, and become a rich brown again. Chestnuts and chocolates are the brunette shades for brown in the fall -- adding a drop of red and/or gold to the formula can create more of an autumnal look.
  • In general for the autumn, going one to two shades darker is a good goal, especially as we head toward the holiday time. Of course it's always a good idea to consult with your hair colorist and see what works best with your skin tone and your own individuality.
Okay my lovelies, there you have it from the color God himself. Softened Ombre is the hot hair color trend for Fall 2013 and it’s time to transition to deeper hues! The Makeup Examiner adores so many things about Marco and watching him work is pure artistry in action. For any professional colorist, TME highly recommends attending one of Marco’s seminars (if you can get in) or snagging up one of his instructional DVDs.

Marco has created a line of cruelty-free hair care products especially for colored treated hair, which you can check out by visiting Marco Pelusi Studios. Note: A very special thank you to Marco Pelusi for taking the time to chat. It was a true pleasure.

Summer To Fall Hair Care Guide From Celebrity Stylist, Sarah Potempa

Celebrity Stylist Sarah Potempa Courtesy of Aussie
Happy Friday lovelies! Can you believe that we’re in the middle of August? Oh, the balmy days of summer are fading fast and we’ll soon be looking at the wonders of fall foliage. For those beautynistas that are pouting about the end of summer, The Makeup Examiner has found this amazing quote that sums up fall fabulously, “Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower” ~Albert Camus. No one can pout when thinking of autumn in those terms or when we get beauty backup from celebrity stylist, Sarah Potempa!

The weather from August through October can be uh … unpredictable. So Sarah offers tips to combat bad hair days no matter what the weather swings our way. Grab your guy for this one, as Sarah also brings us tips for him with the integration of Aussie’s brand new Aussie Men.

Summer to Fall Hair Care

Have your hair go with the weather -- don’t fight it! Instead, use the unpredictable weather to experiment with different products and see what works best for your natural hair.

1. Try a new product! “I love the Sprunch Mousse + Leave-in Conditioner ($3.25),” says Sarah. Also, everyone can benefit from the Hair Insurance Leave-in Conditioner Spray ($3.25), which protects hair from the elements.

2. Swimming in chlorine and saltwater can damage your hair and even tear away at the strands. Sarah recommends putting in a little conditioner before going into the water. Any conditioner will work, but she loves Miraculously Smooth or Moist conditioners ($3.25 each).

-When your hair is a little damp, coat it with conditioner and brush or comb it through. Throw it into a braid or bun and when you come out of the water, your hair will be silky and easy to run your fingers through.

-The conditioner will almost act like a styling product, and once your hair air-dries, it will be smooth and soft.

Summer to Fall Hair Style

“I like creating a look that is undone and messy, but with one element of your look that is still sleek and polished,” says Sarah.

1. Try a messy braid, but keep your bangs sleek. Pull your hair into a smooth braided topknot for a look that is professional, but fun.

2. Ponytails can also be a fun way to experiment with different styles depending on what mood you’re in.

-Try one that is slick and high by using Miraculously Smooth Gel ($3.25) to tame hair.

-As an alternative, keep your ponytail messy and textured with some Sprunch Spray ($3.25).

Guys Guide to Getting Clean

If you’re active and on the go, you can shower everyday but you don’t need to shampoo your hair. Use a little bit of shampoo to clean your SCALP and not your hair -- don’t glop it on! You don’t want to strip your hair of moisture.

1. Use the Deep Clean Shampoo or Daily Clean Shampoo ($5.94 each) to get a deep clean.

-Don’t forget about the back of your head and around the ears!

-Massage the whole scalp to stimulate blood flow, which then stimulates hair growth.

2. The Daily Clean 2N1 ($5.94) allows you to clean the scalp and get rid of residue, but also provides the benefits of conditioning. You get soft, conditioned hair for less work!

-Using a conditioner adds more weight to your hair so it will be less poufy and can also help condition a dry scalp.

Guys Guide to Getting Styled

The most important part of a guy’s head is the line that starts from the temples and goes around the head. This is your guideline for styling. Below that line, style down, and above that line, style up!

1. Aussie Men Maximum Hold Gel ($5.94) is a water-based gel, which will give you the hold you need while still being flexible and moldable … not crunchy! It will also evaporate throughout the day, making your hair feel lighter versus a heavy silicone-based product.

-Squirt the gel on a large flat brush or comb and evenly distribute throughout the hair.

-Take your fingers and piece it out.

2. Aussie Men Texturizing Wax ($2.97) will help enhance a great haircut.

-Take the wax between your thumb and forefinger and twist little sections of the hair to create the textured shape you want.

3. If you love product, use the gel as a base to tame the hair, then the wax to give definition.
