The Experts Guide To Flattering Colors For You

Skin tone fluctuates throughout the year. Therefore, the hues that looked amazing on you throughout the warmer months could easily make you look tired and washed out in the winter. And, we all have experienced the challenges of choosing flattering “change-over” shades for our hair color, nail polish and lipsticks. Fortunately, Kari Hill, Tom Bachik and Billy B. -- Experts from L’Oréal Paris -- have shared some tips on how to choose the most flattering shades … along with product recommendations to make the seasonal color transition a little easier!

Kari Hill, L’Oréal Paris Consulting Hair Colorist – Expert Tip: Instead of using the face, I look at the forearm to determine a more precise and unaffected matching of skin tone. When choosing hair color, in addition to skin tone, you should also consider your natural eye color, present choice of makeup, desired maintenance/upkeep and the time of year.

Cool haircolor tones look best on skin with cool undertones, which can range from blue or pink on fair skin to even an olive undertone for darker. On fair skin, L’Oréal Paris Mousse Absolue in Lightest Icy Blonde or Feria Absolute Platinum typically looks great. For darker skin, consider L’Oréal Paris Mousse Absolue Icy Dark Brown or Superior Preference Luminere Black Sapphire.

Warm haircolor tones look best on skin with golden or yellow undertones, regardless of dark or light skin. Some at-home hair color options that look good on warm skin tones include, L’Oréal Paris Mousse Absolue Lightest Golden Blonde, L’Oréal Paris Excellence Crème Medium Golden Blonde or L’Oréal Paris Feria Dark Gold Blonde.

Neutral toned haircolor is the closest tone that could complement a wide variety of skin tones. I liken a neutral color to the tone of a child’s hair. Here are some haircolor options for accommodating varied skin tones: L’Oréal Paris Mousse Absolute Pure Dark Blonde, Feria Very Light Natural Blonde, or Superior Preference Natural Blonde.

Tom Bachik, L’Oréal Paris Global Nail Artist – Expert Tip: When choosing nail shades, keep it simple and think in warm or cool tones. The easiest way is to look on the underside of your arms. If your veins are mostly purple in tone, then you’re more cool skin toned. If your veins are mostly greenish in tone, then you’re more warm skin toned. Another tip – think about the colors you like to wear and the same palette will likely work for nail shades.

For cool skin tones look at rich berries (L’Oréal ParisColour Riche Nail in Violet Vixen), deep purples (L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Nail in Paparazzi Pleaser) and Bright Blues (L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Nail in Not a Cloud in Sight).

For warm skin tones, I like burnt reds (L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Nail in Red Tote), warm dusty rose tones (L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Nail in Spice Things Up) and rich corals (L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Nail in Tangerine Crush).

Billy B., L’Oréal Paris Consulting Makeup Artist – Expert Tip: When it comes to choosing a good lip color, I not only look at skin tone, but also pay attention to eye color, hair color and what my clients are wearing.

Generally, I used the below guidelines for skin tone and lipsticks:
  • Olive – nudes (L’Oréal Paris Extraordinaire by Colour Riche in Nude Ballet) pinks, oranges (L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Lipcolour in Volcanic) and reds (L’Oréal Paris Colour Caresse Wet Shine Stain in Endless Red)

  • Fair – bold shades in pink and red (L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Balm Pop in Bold Blush and Fiery Red,)

  • Darker skin tones – Bold, rich colors like burgundy, browns (L’Oréal Paris Infallible Never Fail Lipcolour Compact) berry colors (L’Oréal Paris Infallible Le Rouge in Enduring Berry) and deep reds (L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Glossy Balm in Petite Plum).

How Safe Is Your Nail Salon? 10 Tips for a Safe Manicure

Many of us frequent the nail salon and although we’ve all heard about the “dirty dangers,” we still throw caution to the wind in order to acquire a great looking set of nails. Seriously, a visit to your favorite nail salon could leave you walking away with more than a great looking set of nails.

After all, you know that pathogens are right at home in the warm and wet environment that salons provide and proper sanitation is the only avenue of prevention. So, what is a girl to do?!? Beauty industry innovator and found of Lucas-Cide Salon and Spa Disinfectant, Robert Urfer offers up expert advice on how to ensure you’ll walk away with a safe mani/pedi.

Robert’s 10 “Rules” For A Safe Nail Salon Visit:

  1. Arrive 15 minutes early to your appointment so that you have time to glance around the salon. Does it appear clean and professional? A tidy salon is a good indication that the owner and technicians value cleanliness and more likely taking extra steps to sanitize their equipment and tools. If trashcans are overflowing and dust is collecting on shelves, do not trust that the footbaths and nail clippers are sanitary.
  2. Always look for the salon’s license, which should be posted on the wall near the entrance where clients can easily see it along with the technician’s licenses.
  3. How does the salon sterilize their tools? Some salons use UV sterilizers – devices that resemble toaster ovens. A UV sterilizer does not kill bacteria. Instead, you should see bottle of disinfectant. Make sure the liquid does not appear cloudy or foggy, which is an indication that the liquid needs to be changed. Ask if they test their solution regularly with test strips.
  4. Look in the pedicure area. Are the technicians cleaning and disinfecting the footbaths after each use? Make sure the technicians use hot, soapy water to wash the tub. After being washed, the foot spas should be filled again with water.  The proper amount of disinfectant should be added to the water and the spa should be run for at least 10 minutes before being emptied out and wiped clean.
  5. If you are getting acrylic nails or fillings, make sure the nail technician washes her hands before getting started. She should also apply an antibacterial spray or gel to your hands. Make sure she is using sterilized or properly disinfected tools. Even nail files should be disinfected or discarded after each use. Look for a salon that has a set of tools for each client.
  6. Check the nail technician’s work area. Are the technicians cleaning and disinfecting their work areas after each client, replacing used towels with clean, fresh ones? Are used cotton balls, disposable nail files, and wooden tools thrown out properly?
  7. Don’t let the technician cut your cuticles. Cuticles provide natural protection against infection in your nail bed. So, rather than allowing the technician to cut them back, ask the technician to either leave them alone or gently push them back. Cutting cuticles is dangerous because it causes skin to tear, increasing your risk of infection.
  8. To further reduce the risk of infection, some salons provide file bags for individual customers. Each bag contains the tools technicians’ use for manicures and pedicures, such as files, manicure brushes and buffers. The tools are placed in a bag labeled with your name and are used on your nails only. They are cleaned and sterilized or disinfected before and after use. When done, the tools are placed into a plastic bag -- not airtight! -- ready for your next appointment. Some clients also prefer to bring their own manicure set.
  9. If you are still concerned about the risk of infection, consider going to a med spa for your regular nail appointments. Med spas are overseen by a physician, ensuring that the environment, tools, and equipment are cleaned and sterilized or disinfected before and after each client.
  10. If you ever have concerns about your local nail salon you can always call your State Board of Cosmetology. The State Boards of Cosmetology are in place to look out for the clients well being. TME Tip: Many states have websites that allow you to look up the status of professional licensure.
While there is never a guarantee that you’ll leave a nail salon germ-free, hopefully Robert’s tips will lessen the chances of that happening. To learn more about Lucas-Cide Salon and Spa Disinfectant, visit Robert’s website.

Nail Polish Trends Monthly Report

Courtesy of Julep Beauty
Julep Beauty released, today, March 12, its Monthly Nail Polish Color Report. The Report is a snapshot of the top nail polish trends and is based upon both customer preferences and recent sales data.

March Nail Polish Trends from Julep Beauty:
  • Soft Pastels - Sherbet shades like Julep's Rae, a radiant orchid creme that's an exact match to the Pantone 2014 Color of the Year; Elisa, a soft wisteria shimmer; and Lilou, a lemon chiffon creme, were top sellers in Julep's March Maven box.
  • Sheer White - White is always a fresh choice for spring and consumers and fashion designers alike are gravitating toward airy, alabaster tones with translucent finishes. It's unsurprising that Julep's Soraphine, a classic sheer white creme, was a top choice for March.
  • Blues - From cobalt to pale cornflower made a strong statement on the spring runway. Julep's Monaco, a dazzling mariner blue creme that's an exact match to the Pantone 2014 Color of Spring; Margaret, a light periwinkle creme; and Tania, a mermaid teal glitter, were also top sellers.
  • Deep Coral - Pink, red, and orange-tinted coral hues dominated the runway at Spring Fashion Week. In March, Julep Mavens went crazy over Harriet, a guava coral creme shade that brings French Riviera flair to nails.

TME’s opinion is that it’s somewhat difficult to state that a report is “of the consumer” while referencing Pantone’s Color Reports. With that said - soft pastels and translucent white are generally on-trend for Spring. Blue of all hues have been popular for several seasons, and TME is lovin’ periwinkle. As for deep corals, these hues have always been more for Summer. But with the polar vortex, can the summer get here quickly enough?

Last month, the guys supported Breast Cancer Awareness Month, now it’s our turn to support them with some conversation starting nail art. But before we take to our nail lacquer, it’s important to understand why we’re supporting the gentlemen and to get a brief history lesson about the Movember movement.

Founded in Australia in 2003 with a mere 30 guys participating, Movember has developed into a global movement with approximately 3 million registered supporters. The objective for the guys is to grow out their mustaches for the 30 days of November, with bragging rights as the “prize”. But, by growing out their mustaches, guys gain an opportunity to educate others and raise funds for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer, which a whopping one in six men will experience their lifetime. For The Makeup Examiner’s gentlemen readers, who wish to participate, please visit Movember US.

For us ladies, or even the guys, there are quiet a few trendy accessories to don and you can check out “Trendy Ways To SupportMovember” for inspiration. Movember Moustache Style Guide:

1. Select a light base color so that your Movember moustache design really pops.

3. Add a clear topcoat and you’re good to go.

Try each one of the stencils or change up the nail polish color. With Movember manicures, the possibilities are endless. For the hardcore nail art ladies, check out an easy freehand tutorial Here. Dr. Phoebe Rich offers tips to keep your nails looking healthy

Recently while changing up nail polish, The Makeup Examiner noticed that her nails were not looking to lovely. Although, nails are often one of the first things that people notice about you, TME’s concern was less of a vanity issue and far more one of overall health. So she turned to board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Phoebe Rich for answers.

Dr. Rich is also a clinical adjunct professor of dermatology at Oregon Health Science University and created a “healthy nail care” video in collaboration with the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD). The first bit of advice from Dr. Rich, “Always keep your nails clean and dry”. She went on to share, “Never bite your nails or remove the cuticle. Not only do these actions damage the nail, they also increase the risk of infection.” The advice that she offered was amazingly full-spectrum and included our often-neglected toenails.

What beautynista doesn’t love to have pretty and healthy nails? And in fact, healthy nails are the first step to pretty nails. Here’s the lowdown on easy nail care:

  • For fingernails, keep them shaped and free of snags by filing with an emery board.
  • When filing your fingernails, go in one direction straight across the top and then slightly round the slide. By filing in one direction, versus back and forth like a saw, you keep the nail fibers down and lessen the likelihood of hangnails.
  • Do not use your fingernails as a tool, such as opening pop-top cans or removing staples from papers.
  • For toenails, trim them regularly and keep them shorts as to avoid trauma or injury.
  • If your toenails are difficult to cut, soak your feet in warm salt water for 5 minutes before you trim them.
  • Never “dig out” ingrown toenails, see a dermatologist for treatment.
  • Wear shoes that fit properly to avoid “squishing” your toes.
  • The best way to avoid catching a nail fungus, (or other fungi), at a publish pool or the shower at the gym is to always wear water-shoes such as flip-flops.
One thing that Dr. Rich emphasis, “If you notice changes in the look of your nails, experience swelling, or have pain, see a board-certified dermatologist.” Changes, such as the ones that Dr. Rich mentions, can be an indicator of other health issues such as diabetes or poor circulation, which can affect your overall health.

The Makeup Examiner’s Fall 2013 Nail Trends Guide

Perhaps some people are so over seeing nail art, but one peruse on Pinterest and you’ll happily see that the nail art trend isn’t going away anytime soon. As The Makeup Examiner has written before, nails are the final frontier of acceptable self-expression. While we may not break out our sexy red lipstick or our favorite pair of funky earrings to work, we can still sport expressive nails and no one is likely to say anything.

Although nail art is a form of unique self-expression, it’s time to change up the colors, designs, and check out the new nail lacquer offerings for Fall 2013. To bring you current with what’s in store for your manicure, The Makeup Examiner has put together a list of the best Fall 2013 nail trends. And, oh my, brands have been hard at work creating everything from easy-to-use textured finishes to insane holographic shine, and amazing seasonal colors.

Oxblood - This deep, rich red is a TME favorite and is a color that will carry all the way through winter. Pictured are Tom Ford Beauty Nail Lacquer in Bordeaux Lust ($32), Marc Jacobs Beauty Enamored High-Shine Nail Lacquer in Jezebel ($18) and Zoya Nail Polish in Janice ($8).

Navy -NARS Nail Polish in 413 BLKR ($19), Essie Nail Polish in After School Boy Blazer ($8), and OPI Nail Lacquer in Incognito in Sausalito ($6.95).

Amethyst - Lancôme Vernis in Love in Purple Fiction ($15), Zoya Nail Polish in Neve ($8) and China Glaze Nail Lacquer in Charmed I'm Sure ($3.99) all offer a perfect breakaway from bright purple.

Coffee -The best way to describe this color trend is “Coffee the way you take it!” Some days The Makeup Examiner likes it straight up like Illamasqua Nail Varnish in Taint ($17) and sometimes it’s more like SpaRitual Nail Lacquer in UnComplicated ($12). No matter how you like your coffee, stick with the warm tones in this hue and you can’t go wrong.

Burnt Orange - Initially, bright orange dominated everything from lipstick to blusher to polish for Summer 2013, now that we’re moving into the cooler months, burn it! Butter London Nail Lacquer in Sunbaker ($15), Priti Nail Polish in Giant Granadilla ($13.50) and Ciate London Nail Polish in Skinny Dip ($15) offer the perfect hues of Burnt Orange for Fall 2013.

Steel Grey - Maybelline Color Show Nail Lacquer in Pedal to the Metal and Impeccable Greys ($3.99 each) and RBG Nail Color in Steel ($16) offer multiple options for this season’s grey hue

Metallic Colors - Estée Lauder Pure Color Long Lasting Nail Lacquer - Tom Pecheux's Metal Mania ($20 each), Topshop Nail Polish in Hart of Gold ($12), OPI Nail Lacquer in Peace, Love, and OPI ($9), Orly Nail Lacquer in Angel Rain ($8), and Essie Nail Polish in For the Twill of It ($8). This array of metallic shades shows the versatility and pure fun of this season’s trend. Metallic will easily carry you through into the winter months too!

Texture Me - For those that love textured nail polishes and lacquers, this season has no shortage of offerings. From matte finish glitter to high gloss sequin, you are only bound by your imagination when it comes to textured polishes. Pictured here are Sally Hansen Fuzzy Coat Nail Color in Tight Knit and Sally Hansen Sugar Coat in Sugar Fix ($5.99 each).

With 32 customized CoverGirl Outlast Stay Brilliant Nail Gloss bundles, one combination per team, we get to easily show our team loyalty by wearing our heart on our hands for our home team.

The official CoverGirl NFL nail polishes will be available beginning Thursday, Sep. 5 at CoverGirl. In addition to customized colors for the season, CoverGirl is also going to provide fans the opportunity to receive fanicures at select games. Inside stadiums, CoverGirl will have NFL Style Lounges and outside the stadium CoverGirl will offer mobile manicure stations. Too cool! While you’re waiting for Kickoff 2013, you can peruse CoverGirl’s Facebook page and check it out all season for inspiration.
