The Experts Guide To Flattering Colors For You

Skin tone fluctuates throughout the year. Therefore, the hues that looked amazing on you throughout the warmer months could easily make you look tired and washed out in the winter. And, we all have experienced the challenges of choosing flattering “change-over” shades for our hair color, nail polish and lipsticks. Fortunately, Kari Hill, Tom Bachik and Billy B. -- Experts from L’Oréal Paris -- have shared some tips on how to choose the most flattering shades … along with product recommendations to make the seasonal color transition a little easier!

Kari Hill, L’Oréal Paris Consulting Hair Colorist – Expert Tip: Instead of using the face, I look at the forearm to determine a more precise and unaffected matching of skin tone. When choosing hair color, in addition to skin tone, you should also consider your natural eye color, present choice of makeup, desired maintenance/upkeep and the time of year.

Cool haircolor tones look best on skin with cool undertones, which can range from blue or pink on fair skin to even an olive undertone for darker. On fair skin, L’Oréal Paris Mousse Absolue in Lightest Icy Blonde or Feria Absolute Platinum typically looks great. For darker skin, consider L’Oréal Paris Mousse Absolue Icy Dark Brown or Superior Preference Luminere Black Sapphire.

Warm haircolor tones look best on skin with golden or yellow undertones, regardless of dark or light skin. Some at-home hair color options that look good on warm skin tones include, L’Oréal Paris Mousse Absolue Lightest Golden Blonde, L’Oréal Paris Excellence Crème Medium Golden Blonde or L’Oréal Paris Feria Dark Gold Blonde.

Neutral toned haircolor is the closest tone that could complement a wide variety of skin tones. I liken a neutral color to the tone of a child’s hair. Here are some haircolor options for accommodating varied skin tones: L’Oréal Paris Mousse Absolute Pure Dark Blonde, Feria Very Light Natural Blonde, or Superior Preference Natural Blonde.

Tom Bachik, L’Oréal Paris Global Nail Artist – Expert Tip: When choosing nail shades, keep it simple and think in warm or cool tones. The easiest way is to look on the underside of your arms. If your veins are mostly purple in tone, then you’re more cool skin toned. If your veins are mostly greenish in tone, then you’re more warm skin toned. Another tip – think about the colors you like to wear and the same palette will likely work for nail shades.

For cool skin tones look at rich berries (L’Oréal ParisColour Riche Nail in Violet Vixen), deep purples (L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Nail in Paparazzi Pleaser) and Bright Blues (L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Nail in Not a Cloud in Sight).

For warm skin tones, I like burnt reds (L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Nail in Red Tote), warm dusty rose tones (L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Nail in Spice Things Up) and rich corals (L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Nail in Tangerine Crush).

Billy B., L’Oréal Paris Consulting Makeup Artist – Expert Tip: When it comes to choosing a good lip color, I not only look at skin tone, but also pay attention to eye color, hair color and what my clients are wearing.

Generally, I used the below guidelines for skin tone and lipsticks:
  • Olive – nudes (L’Oréal Paris Extraordinaire by Colour Riche in Nude Ballet) pinks, oranges (L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Lipcolour in Volcanic) and reds (L’Oréal Paris Colour Caresse Wet Shine Stain in Endless Red)

  • Fair – bold shades in pink and red (L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Balm Pop in Bold Blush and Fiery Red,)

  • Darker skin tones – Bold, rich colors like burgundy, browns (L’Oréal Paris Infallible Never Fail Lipcolour Compact) berry colors (L’Oréal Paris Infallible Le Rouge in Enduring Berry) and deep reds (L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Glossy Balm in Petite Plum).

Hottest Hair Trends For Fall/Winter 14-15 from Celebrity Stylist Bill Murphy

Fall is just around the corner … stop whining … we’re not any happier about it then you. Okay, we’re lying; we love all the seasons, as each one brings amazement of its own. And yes, we’re still in the throes of summer, which is why as an added bonus, Celebrity hairstylist and creator of Recitals Hair Care, Bill Murphy is not only sharing the most fabulous F/W 14-15 hair trends, but he’s is also shared a few summer hair care tips!

Clockwise - Dsquared2, Nicole Miller, Loris Azzaro

Here are Bill’s top five forecasts for the upcoming season:

1. I LOVE THE SIXTIES - The 1960s are back in a big way with mod fashions showing up on the runway. “Hairstyles always reflect what you wear,” says Bill. The angular bob made iconic by Vidal Sassoon will undoubtedly be resurrected but in a 21st century version of geometric shapes without the harsh edge. “We're looking at softer, more diffused lines, less stylized interpretations that don't go over the top," Bill explains. “And for long hair, think straight but with some volume on top.”

2. TWIST and SHOUT – “For the rest of the year, we’ll be seeing a lot of creative braiding and twists for hair,” Bill says. “There’s no right or wrong way to do it since you can really put your own spin into this. Whether you twist it up in a bun or let braids fall around your shoulders or in back, it’s a great new look.”

3. BOHEMIAN NEW WAVE - "Stylish, very modern yet very convenient," is how Bill describes the next trend. "I see this as the ultimate in versatility. It's somewhere in the middle of structured and carefree while remaining uncontrived. Think cascading natural waves. When you leave it down, it's strong yet romantic. If you want something more elegant, you just pull it back in a bun and let strands fall in soft, natural tendrils to frame your face. This gives you the ability to quickly adapt to circumstances whether you're going to work, going out to a formal evening, or spending a carefree weekend with friends."

4. IN LIVING COLOR - "Colors are getting eclectic," declares Bill. "It won't be about highlights and lowlights so much as an overall glossing. Women are experimenting more with rich, pretty or even offbeat colors. However you wish to go, try not to experiment on yourself and consult with a professional colorist.” On this point, we here at TME must disagree and defer to Color Expert, Marco Pelusi. For the latest Hair Color Trends for Fall 2014, check out “Fall 2014 Hair Color Trends withCelebrity Colorist Marco Pelusi

5. HEALTHY HAIR IS ALWAYS IN STYLE - "None of the latest trends will matter much if your hair is dry, damaged or fried," says Bill. "Unfortunately, most of us have fast paced lifestyles that keep us from pampering ourselves the way we deserve. That's why I formulated my Recitals Haircare line of products. Used regularly Recitals helps you achieve strong, healthy, naturally shiny hair - and there's nothing more stylish, more fabulous and more glamorous than that."

You can catch more tips, and Recitals Hair Care products, online at Recitals!

Fall 2014 Hair Color Trends with Celebrity Colorist Marco Pelusi

It may be difficult to think of fall while we’re all enjoying the gorgeous summer weather, most especially this past week when the weather seems as if it was order off of the “perfect summer weather” menu. But, soon enough we will be surrendering our breezy dresses and now’s the time to look ahead and checkout the forecast for the perfect hues for our lovely tresses. Who better to check in with then world-renowned celebrity colorist, Marco Pelusi of Marco Pelusi Hair Studio in West Hollywood? Which is precisely what I did!

In a TME exclusive, Marco offers readers the hottest trends and amazing hair colors for Fall 2014. Aside from being the “Master of Color,” Marco truly believes in making women feel beautiful and this is why The Makeup Examiner went straight to Marco for his expert opinion. Read on to find out what hues work for blondes, brunettes and redheads, as well as expert color care advice for the cooler months.

Yvonne: I’d read somewhere that Platinum Blonde and Metallics are the hot trends for Fall 2014. What do you think of this?

Marco: I definitely think that platinum blonde is making a comeback these days. The cycle fashion tells us that a trend [begins] as avant-garde, moves into fashionable, goes mainstream and then ends as outdated. And, goes back around to avant-garde. This has happened with the platinum blonde. It was almost been seen as outdated for a while, but I think it's been creeping in. Meryl Streep sort of hinted at it a few years back in “The Devil Wears Prada” -- when she wore her solid light hair -- and at that time, platinum blonde was still outdated but moving toward avant-garde. As with all trends, it takes a few years [to become mainstream], and now we are seeing more all-over blondes. So, yes to the all-over platinum blonde! Metallics I'm not so sure about.

For several seasons ombre has ruled as THE hair color trend and I really thought that the trend would finally go away. But with mega-stars like Jared Leto, quite literally rockin’ this look, and Jessica Biel sporting soft ombre locks, is it still a hot trend? What are you seeing as on-trend for Fall 2014?

Marco: We are still feeling the bleeding in of the "sombre" … or, that is, the softer, summer/fall ombre. I had a strong feeling this trend would stick with us in its various forms, as it takes on a new feel, as time moves forward. This trend moves more into the ends being slightly sun kissed or tipped with a gradually lighter color -- this differs greatly from the previous strong line of demarcation from the old ombre -- where the hair literally went from black to blonde. This is a much softer progression, and in my opinion, is quite beautiful, and definitely feels on-trend throughout the fall.

Who’s wearing the sombre look right now?

Marco: My dear friend and client Carol Alt has a version of this look, more or less, right now. Her ends gradually, beautifully lighten up as you see her darker hair progress throughout. Additionally, I have to admit, I'm a huge Bravo fan. I'm acquainted with many people involved with the shows, and right now, Carole Radziwill of “The Real Housewives of New York” is definitely wearing a sombre.  Her hair beautifully starts out darker and bleeds into light, with gradual transition.

With many projects together, I know that you love your redheads and you are hands-down THE color expert. What about blondes and brunettes? What are the on-trend hues that will transition from summer into the cooler months?

Marco: Yes I happen to love reds -- also red coloring is perhaps the most challenging for stylists/colorists to achieve -- that is, to capture a really, really good red -- and therefore my voice is quite specific in this area. However, I do create my own blonding/highlighting techniques. I’ve just returned from my annual presentations at the International Beauty Shows in Vegas, where I demonstrated this technique to hundreds of professional hairstylists. (Readers, Marco truly is a master at color and offers instructional DVDs on his world-renowned technique) The blondes who are on-trend will gradually add more lowlights -- deeper, richer, darker tones throughout their blonde hair -- to reflect the change in seasons. The brunettes can consider adding deeper and warmer tones -- again to reflect the change not only in the season, but the fall colors of the leaves, and everything around us. Brunettes can add a touch of deep gold’s and hints of reds/auburns; and moving into winter we can begin moving into cooler and darker browns.

You’ve taught us that color care is so important. Are there different steps to take during the cooler months to maintain our color?

Marco: Indoor heat is always a culprit for drying hair as the fall is upon us. It's time for deep conditioning treatments. Nourish the hair as much as possible. Find a deep conditioning formula that works for you. Shampoo your hair, rinse, squeeze the moisture from your hair, towel blot, and apply the deep conditioner. Allow it to sit for 30 minutes, preferably in a warmer or steamier area. Then rinse. Additionally, when the weather turns colder, and our indoor heat goes up, applying a leave-in conditioner can become your friend!

Okay my lovelies, there you have it from the color God himself. Sombre will continue to be a very on-trend look for Fall/Winter 2014-15. Going platinum blonde is very in vogue and brunettes should embrace the natural colors of fall. Color care is vital for keeping those locks looking lovely and Marco has created a line of cruelty-free hair care products especially for colored treated hair, which you can check out by visiting Marco Pelusi Studios. The product that I can’t do without is Marco Anti-Frizz Leave-In Conditioner with Collagen Color Guard, as it’s not only the perfect product to feign off the environmental conditions that cause our hair to go bonkers in the cooler months, but also the best leave-in for year-round! You can keep up-to-date with Marco on Twitter and Facebook!

Bigen Hair Care Product Review For Winter Hair Care

Happy Tuesday lovelies! Today, The Makeup Examiner is going to review a few products from Bigen. So without further ado, let’s jump right in. Bigen is a Japanese company, best known for its innovative Permanent Powder Hair Color and Bigen Semi-Permanent Hair Color, both of which do not contain ammonia or hydrogen peroxide. And, both have become cult classics for women in over 70 countries.

Recently, Bigen expanded its offerings with the introduction of several hair care products, which incorporate “the hair secrets of Asian women who have long, strong, shiny hair,” with the infusion of sunflower oil, shea butter, beeswax, and rice water essence (Inositol), into its formulas. The Makeup Examiner has naturally curly hair and depending upon her mood (and energy level), she will straighten the often-untamable curls.

Beginning with Bigen Protect & Repair Shampoo ($4.99), while the shampoo offers a lovely organic scent, that’s about all that it offers. Bigen Protect & Repair Shampoo didn’t leave my hair feeling clean, protected or moisturized. Bigen Protect & Repair Shampoo actually left my hair feeling stripped. Fortunately, Bigen Protect & Repair Deep Conditioner was amazing.

Bigen Protect & Repair Deep Conditioner comes in pillow packs that are the perfect size for a deep conditioning treatment and has the same lovely scent as Bigen Protect & Repair Shampoo. For those that groan over single size pillow packs, be reminded that Fermodyl Roux Professional Hair Treatments come in one-use vials! Bigen Protect & Repair Deep Conditioner left my hair feeling repaired, protected and nourished. At the budget-beauty price of $1.99, Bigen Protect & Repair Deep Conditioner is a major bargain for anyone who needs a solid deep conditioning treatment!

Bigen’s hair care line offers two other products, Bigen Sheen Spray and Bigen Polishing Serum. The Makeup Examiner wishes that she was sent the sheen spray, but alas she wasn’t and will round out this review with Bigen Polishing Serum. To test out the polishing serum, TME whipped out the blow dryer and flat iron. Yep, it was time to straighten her hair! Actually, TME tried the polishing serum to tame a few flyaways on her curly hair and was thrilled with the results of a few drops of serum. When TME straightens her hair, it can become a major fail sans the correct products. Happily, Bigen Polishing Serum was AHA-mazing! The Makeup Examiner used the polishing serum as a protectent prior to straightening her hair and was pleasantly suspired that the serum left her hair smooth, shiny and well … protected.

As always, The Makeup Examiner hopes that you’ve found this review to be helpful. You can find Bigen Hair Care Products online and at SallyBeauty Supply nationwide.

Beat The Winter Beauty Blues

Reese Dane
An Artic chill has fallen upon the majority of the country and The Makeup Examiner feels fairly confident in stating that winter is on. The whipping chill has her, and her friends, dreaming of a long vacation in a much warmer climate. Regrettably, jetting away for the winter isn’t an option. So as the old adage goes, “If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em”.

When it’s frightfully cold outside, bring warmth to your surroundings indoors with a few simple “pick me up” steps. December and January are festive months so it’s time to get into the spirit of things. Make a delicious cup of hot chocolate (with mini marshmallows) and light a few seasonally scented candles to set the tone. These simple actions will hopefully lift your spirits a little and get you motivated for the next fun steps.

There actually is a plus side to being stuck indoors, as it presents an awesome opportunity to take time for ourselves. The Makeup Examiner loves to try out new beauty trends, but knows that not every trend can be mastered in the 2 minutes that we have before running out the door to work. If you’re stuck indoors, you have plenty of time to try out, and master, the biggest winter beauty trends. This winter, the metallics have taken over. But metallic can be tricky … too much of it (like shimmer) and your looking more like a clown then a beautynista.

Now is also the perfect time to pamper yourself. After you finished experimenting with the latest beauty trends, treat yourself to a few at-home spa treatments with a few of The Makeup Examiner’s favorite products:

  • Take a rejuvenating sea salt bath with Clarisea Clarifying Salt Treatment
  • Take a relaxing shower with a shower bomb like Level Naturals Shower Bombs
  • Do a DIY hair mask - Avocado and Mayonnaise Hair Mask
  • Give yourself a pedicure using Kerstin Florian FuB Balm
  • Give yourself a facial with Pangea Organics Japanese Matcha Tea Acai Goji Berry Mask
  • Do a head to toe body scrub with DIY Brown Sugar & Vanilla Scrub
  • Paint your nails in a lovely, deep red like TME’s current favorite SpaRitual’s From The Heart
If all fails and you’re still suffering from a case of the winter beauty blues, spray on your favorite perfume and whip out a bold lipstick!

Men’s Winter Hair Care Tips From Aussie Celebrity Stylist, Sarah Potempa

Men, just like women, face their fair share of bad hair days during the winter months. So, why shouldn’t our guys get great advice on how to keep their manes looking healthy and handsome? On Saturday, Dec. 7, The Makeup Examiner turned to Aussie Celebrity Stylist, SarahPotempa for easy “how-tos” on how to conquer everything from hat hair to frizz. Ladies if you’re feeling left out, Sarah assures that these tips can work for you too!

Sarah Potempa Courtesy of Aussie
Sarah offers that great winter hair care begins in the shower. For the guy who wants a quick and easy way to get great hair, the Aussie Men Care Collection has just the right solution. Made specifically for conditioning shorter hair that is dry and frizzy, Aussie Moist 2N1 and Aussie Men Daily Clean 2N1 will leave hair smooth.

In the shower:

  • Hair tends to get extremely dry in the winter, so the Aussie Moist 2N1 and Aussie Men Daily Clean 2N1 are perfect for getting hair clean but also giving it the extra conditioning that it might be craving, all in one step. The conditioner helps to add more weight to the hair so it will be less poufy but can also help condition a dry scalp, which is a winter hair issue that a lot of people face!
  • For guys, and girls, with longer hair, bring a wide toothed comb into the shower and comb the 2N1 through the hair to distribute evenly and leave hair smooth from root to tip.
Of course, there’s a bit to do out of the shower too. Great style shouldn’t require a lot of hard work. Take control and tame your mane with Aussie Men Texturizing Wax.

Out of the shower:

“I love the Aussie Men Texturizing Wax for both guys and girls to combat winter hat hair,” says Sarah.

  • Aussie Men Texturizing Wax has a great flexible hold that helps lift the hair and maintain volume while also giving your style definition and taming frizz. A little goes a long way. Apply a pea-sized amount and distribute throughout your hair.
  • Coming back inside after a wintery mix can mean bad news for hair! I recommend spraying hair with the Aussie Hair Insurance Leave-In Conditioner and then blow-drying with a paddle brush. This can help to revive dry and damaged hair and also bring your style back to life.

Winter Hair Care Tips From Celebrity Colorist Marco Pelusi

Reese Dane
The Makeup Examiner caught up with world-renowned, celebrity colorist Marco Pelusi on Thursday, Dec. 5 and Marco shared his expert tips for winter hair care and winter color shade transition. The Makeup Examiner would be extremely remiss if she didn’t begin this article with huge congratulations to Marco Pelusi for winning the prestigious John Chase Art & Design Award! Congratulations to my dear friend and the very best colorist on the planet. Moving on to the real reason why you stopped by today … Marco’s expert tips. Check the end of this article for a holiday special on Marco Hair Care products!

(L to R) Brandy Kopp and Jennifer O'Dell - Courtesy of Marco Pelusi Hair Studios
TME: What do advise for a specific winter color change?
Marco: During wintertime, most of us like to wear a darker color in our hair, and it’s certainly preferable -- even you blondes out there may wish to deepen your color. It’s just more of a natural appearance to have brighter color when it’s really sunny outside during the warmer months, and a richer, deeper tone when it’s gets colder. Often a reddish tone is a lovely choice to add into your color during wintertime if your skin tone can carry it.

What is the biggest problem with color treated hair?
A problem can arise quickly when you add red or darker colors as they sometimes fade more quickly than the usual blonde or brunette color. As a general note, reds are first to fade, because they are the largest dye molecules. Whether you’re a redhead, blonde or brunette, if you are going even a bit darker/redder, you should always ask your colorist what he/she could do to prevent hair from premature color fade.

What questions should we be asking our colorist?
Be sure to ask if he/she is just pulling through the same root color, or using a fresh color formula for the ends of your hair. Ask if the formula will be on the ends of your hair, and for how long, and why. Really put your colorist to the test so you’ll be able to maintain the color longer. Then you need to evaluate which haircare products you’re using at home. You need to make sure that your products are specifically formulated to repair and moisturize, as well as prevent hair from premature color fade.

What can we do at home to prevent color fade?
As a general rule, it’s possible that you won’t need to shampoo as often, perhaps every other day, which will help retain your hair color for a longer period of time.

If we choose to take our hair color darker, what’s the best way for an all over natural look?
When going darker and/or redder during these winter months, many of us have eyebrows or eyelashes lighter than our new hair color. It is definitely possible to tint either or both. This is a procedure I recommend for a total look of beauty. When you add red to the hair, it’s possible a hint of red may also look good added to the color of your eyebrows. Eyebrow and eyelash tinting is very easy to do, but I recommend going to a salon, rather than doing it yourself to ensure that your color is in sync, and to ensure safety. With eyelash tinting, there are necessary safety precautions a professional must take. Make certain the salon you patron takes care of safety.

What’s most important for hair care during the winter months?
During the winter months, in general for all hair, but especially color treated hair, we need to prevent our hair from drying out, especially at the ends. The longer your hair is, the older it is, and it will need special treatment during the colder months. Longer hair doesn’t have the benefit of sebum or hair oils produced at the scalp that keep the hair shaft healthy and shiny.

In addition, any different dimensions/levels of color/chemicals on the hair creates a need also for more conditioning during winter. Therefore it’s a matter of using high quality restorative products – shampoo for the scalp, and conditioner for the ends. When you condition, you need to allow time for the conditioner to sit on the ends of your hair. The concept is just like moisturizing your skin.

It’s important not to over shampoo/cleanse the hair, because you can dry it out. All you really need to do is shampoo your scalp, and let the shampoo rinse down the ends, as opposed to forcefully scrubbing through the older ends of your hair. When conditioning, however, you only truly need to concern yourself with the ends of the hair, where moisture needs to be replenished constantly. The moral of the story is to richen or darken or redden your color during winter – and to moisturize and take extra special good care of it to boot!
